About The Position

As an integral part of The Harbor Bank of Maryland’s mission, the BO/Associate Area Relationship Banker is responsible for driving business growth and deepening client relationships within an assigned market area. This role combines consultative sales expertise with community engagement to expand the Bank’s footprint and deliver tailored financial solutions. The Relationship Banker proactively identifies, acquires, and cultivates customer relationships by presenting a full range of bank products and services including deposit accounts, consumer lending, mortgage referrals, commercial banking solutions, and investment opportunities. The position requires a high level of professional maturity, strategic outreach capabilities, and the ability to develop Centers of Influence (COIs) while serving as an ambassador for the Bank within the community.

Requirements

  • Sales Strategy and Business Development: Demonstrated ability to develop and implement sales strategies, customer acquisition plans, and business development initiatives aimed at driving branch success and growth.
  • Community and Customer Engagement: Proven ability to engage with the community and local businesses to enhance brand visibility and foster long-term customer relationships.
  • Branch Operations Management: Thorough knowledge of branch banking operations and the ability to coordinate daily functions, address customer issues, and maintain a high level of operational efficiency.
  • Product and Service Knowledge: Familiarity with the Bank’s products and services, including savings, checking, and loan offerings. Ability to explain these products to customers and develop solutions that meet their needs.
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Knowledge of federal and state banking regulations and the ability to ensure the branch meets all compliance obligations, including fraud prevention and BSA requirements.
  • Leadership and Interpersonal Skills: Strong leadership abilities to manage staff performance and promote a culture of accountability and excellence. Excellent interpersonal skills to develop business relationships and drive sales.
  • Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in retail or commercial banking, with a proven track record in business development, customer relationship management, and sales.
  • Strong working knowledge of bank products and services, consumer lending, and cross-functional referral processes.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to develop trust and rapport with diverse clientele.
  • Proven ability to generate business through proactive outreach and develop meaningful relationships with clients and community leaders.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in high-volume or commercial banking environments.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively call on existing and potential clients to develop, grow, and retain relationships by recommending appropriate financial solutions.
  • Develop and execute an individualized business development plan for acquiring new customers in target markets and industries.
  • Identify customer needs and provide cross-sell referrals to mortgage, commercial lending, and wealth management teams.
  • Actively pursue sales and revenue goals for deposits, loans, and ancillary services by conducting pipeline reviews and maintaining robust follow-up practices.
  • Represent the Bank in the community by participating in civic organizations, chambers of commerce, and networking groups.
  • Serve as an active participant in local events, committees, and boards to expand the Bank’s network and strengthen its community presence.
  • Promote the Bank’s mission and act as a brand ambassador to build trust and visibility in assigned territories.
  • Conduct thorough needs assessments with customers to deliver tailored financial solutions and strengthen long-term loyalty.
  • Follow up on all new account, loan, and referral opportunities to ensure an exceptional customer experience.
  • Develop Centers of Influence (COIs) and leverage relationships to generate referrals.
  • Maintain knowledge of current banking policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Stay abreast of new bank products, services, and technology to ensure clients are informed of all available options.
  • Support branch operations by assisting with account opening, loan processing, and ensuring compliance with all security and BSA requirements.
  • Maintain flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and travel regularly across branches and corporate locations as needed.
  • Comply with all federal and state regulations and rules impacting this position, meet all risk and compliance obligations, including the completion of required training.
