The Blow Mold Lead (Nights) is within our Auto/Car Care/Prestone division and is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a blow molding production line in our plastic extrusion plant. This role ensures efficient, safe, and high-quality production by leading a team of operators, troubleshooting equipment and process issues, and driving continuous improvement. The Team Lead also mentors the team to adhere to safety, quality, and production standards. This role will report to our Prestone Operations Supervisor in Alsip, Illinois.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required, Associate's degree or technical certification in plastics manufacturing, mechanical engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 2 years of hands-on experience in blow molding operations.
  • Strong understanding of blow molding processes and machinery, including extruders and parison control systems.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and experience with maintenance tools and techniques for minor repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and production specifications.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
  • Communication: Verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly and concisely to team members, supervisors, and other departments.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure product quality and process accuracy.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (e.g., maintenance, quality, engineering).
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to changing production demands.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong understanding of machine operation, repair, and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, motivate, and mentor blow molding operators while promoting a positive work environment.
  • Assign daily duties and coordinate workflow to achieve production targets and schedules.
  • Provide on-the-job training and guidance to both new and existing team members on machine operation, quality checks, and safety procedures.
  • Assist the Production Supervisor in managing employee responsibilities, including interviewing, counseling, and addressing performance or behavioral issues.
  • Ensure that all team members understand and comply with company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Oversee the operation of blow molding machines and auxiliary equipment (e.g., blenders, grinders, trimmers, conveyors).
  • Monitor production processes to ensure finished products meet quality and quantity specifications (e.g., weight, wall thickness, opacity, visual defects).
  • Perform and/or assign quality checks, audits, and measurements with various tools (calipers, height gauges).
  • Lead and engage in machine setups, changeovers, and mold changes, ensuring both efficiency and accuracy.
  • Identify and resolve process issues (e.g., machine malfunctions, quality issues, material inconsistencies) to minimize downtime and waste.
  • Ensure that all materials and components required for work orders are present and managed effectively.
  • Maintain accurate production documents, including daily production reports, scrap rates, and efficiency metrics.
  • Relieve operators for breaks as necessary to maintain a continuous production flow.
  • Promote a culture of quality by ensuring compliance with quality control measures and practices.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of products to identify and address any quality defects.
  • Analyze production data to identify opportunities for cost reduction, improve efficiency improvements, and defect reduction.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instructions.
  • Promote a strong safety culture that ensures a safe and secure work environment and encourages safe behaviors within the team.
  • Immediately report any safety issues, incidents, or near misses to the supervisor or department manager.
  • Adhere to and enforce all environmental and safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area (5S principles).
