About The Position

37.5 hours | 2‑year Fixed Term | New Cross Hospital (with cross‑site working at Walsall Manor) Hybrid role with specialist training + research opportunities. Leading the management of Blood-Borne Virus test results (HIV/Hepatitis B and C) from the Emergency Department, ensuring timely follow‑up and coordination of onward care. The post is based at New Cross Hospital, but will also provide an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues at Walsall Manor Hospital. The role includes supervising junior staff, contributing to service development, and potentially opportunity to undertake research nurse responsibilities. We’re looking for an enthusiastic and forward‑thinking Band 6 Senior BBV Nurse to join our dynamic team and lead the follow‑up of HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C test results from our busy Emergency Department. This is a unique opportunity to combine specialist clinical practice , service development , and research experience within a supportive and innovative environment. You’ll be based at New Cross Hospital, with the chance to collaborate across sites and work closely with HIV, Hepatology, and Sexual Health teams. You’ll take the lead on managing all ED BBV test results — including complex, equivocal and unconfirmed results — ensuring patients receive timely, safe, and compassionate follow‑up. You’ll become a key point of contact for patients with new BBV diagnoses, coordinating their care and supporting them through the next steps of their journey. You’ll work across multidisciplinary teams, building strong relationships with secondary care, primary care, and community partners. You’ll contribute to service improvement, audits, and quality initiatives that shape the future of BBV care. You’ll have the chance to develop research skills, support clinical trials, and gain experience as a Research Nurse. You’ll benefit from structured training within HIV and Sexual Health services to deepen your specialist expertise. You’ll deliver teaching and champion BBV awareness across the organisation.

Requirements

A Registered Nurse (NMC) with experience in infectious diseases, sexual health, hepatology, or BBV care.
Someone confident in delivering complex results and coordinating multidisciplinary care.
A natural leader who enjoys supervising junior staff and driving service improvements.
A nurse with an interest in research and a willingness to undertake research training.
Strong communication, organisation, and data‑handling skills (including Excel or similar).
A proactive, compassionate clinician who thrives in a fast‑paced, patient‑focused environment.

Responsibilities

Lead on reviewing and managing ED BBV test results, including results for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
The role requires understanding of all ‘non-negative’ results including equivocal and unconfirmed results and management of untested or inadequate samples
Ensure timely review, tracking and communication of results, including being proactive in finding ways to contact difficult to reach patients. This will involve liaising with a wide range of secondary care teams, primary care and community partners.
Provide advanced patient support and case management for BBV‑positive results. This will involve liaising with HIV teams and Hepatology teams to ensure patients with positive test results are accessing the appropriate care.
Ensure accurate data on ED BBV testing is collated and submitted to national portals
Contribute to service development, audits, and quality improvement projects
Be willing to undertake research opportunities, including recruitment to studies, data collection, and supporting clinical trials.
Deliver teaching sessions on BBV awareness, sexual health, and HIV.
Ensure compliance with infection control, safeguarding, and national guidelines.
Engage in structured training opportunities within HIV and Sexual Health departments.
