About The Position

The Block Operator Trainee position is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trains in accordance with the Operating Rules and Special Instruction. This role involves the care and operation of block and interlocking stations, towers, and supplies, ensuring the safe delivery of train orders and the prompt recording and reporting of train movements. The position requires operating power control boards, switches, signals, and bridges that regulate traffic, while adhering to safety regulations and wearing appropriate protective clothing.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC).
  • Possess a valid driver's license from the state of legal residence.
  • Ability to convey shift transfer information clearly in oral and written form.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to read manuals of operating rules.
  • Capability to write train orders and reports.
  • Ability to report for assignments promptly.
  • Ability to receive and issue orders and/or instructions quickly and accurately.
  • Even-tempered, diligent, detail-oriented, and able to maintain composure during stressful situations.
  • Pass mandatory Transportation Signal & Definitions exam.

Nice To Haves

  • Some college credits.
  • Excellent memory and cognitive recall skills.
  • Familiarization with the operation of the Transportation Services Department.

Responsibilities

  • Care and operation of block and interlocking stations, towers, and supplies.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient movement of trains and delivery of train orders.
  • Promptly record and report train movements verbally or by computer.
  • Operate power control boards and movable bridges.
  • Operate switches, signals, and bridges that regulate traffic.
  • Arrange for the use of blocks, tracks, interlocking switches, and signals for train movement.
  • Wear minimum Level D-type protective clothing as prescribed by OSHA regulations.
