About The Position

The role of the Biostatistician and Director is to provide complex and critical consulting, leadership, statistical expertise, data analysis, and data interpretation services to advance and support the research community within the department and the university. The Biostatistician will have the opportunity to design and shape key processes and procedures in the Data Analytics Core. This position requires the ability to work independently, manage multiple overlapping data analysis projects, and communicate effectively with staff and faculty on a wide range of topics. Given the substantial volumes and diverse data types involved in these projects, fluency with various statistical/programming software is essential. There is a growing need for multifaceted centralized analytic support within the Department of Medicine and the UW and the Biostatistician contributes to the growth and success by executing the department's mission and vision. The goal of this position is to provide and create department-wide biostatistical support for faculty-initiated projects as part of the departmental Data Analytics Core team. This position requires accuracy, efficiency, flexibility, creativity, and a desire to serve multiple stakeholders, while working within UW regulations. We anticipate near term growth; thus, the incumbent would also be responsible for recruiting and onboarding additional master's level analysts and leading the project management across the team. The position reports to the Vice Chair of Research, and partners with multiple senior leaders in the department.

Requirements

  • Doctoral Degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology or a related field and at least 2 years' related experience with progressive responsibility at a diverse, complex, multi-faceted organization.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
  • Demonstrated dedication to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience and advanced knowledge with SAS, R, Python, STATA, or other coding language and programming software.
  • Experience with federal grant submissions, including proposals to the NIH and DOD
  • Strong analytical communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize projects.
  • Strong focus and quality and timely delivery of work.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a consultant-based model/shared service, research setting and/or medical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Research and determine appropriate methodologic procedures for a range of statistical analyses, including biostatistics and bioinformatics.
  • Be able to perform multivariable statistical analyses using advanced analytic approaches.
  • Collaborate with individuals or interdisciplinary research teams on projects from inception through publication. Tasks may include assessing feasibility, developing objective(s), performing sample size and power calculations, generating and implementing randomization schema, and writing statistical sections of research protocols and manuscripts (e.g., statistical analysis plan).
  • Develop knowledge and skills in established and emerging analytical techniques.
  • Direct day-to-day operations of the Data Analytic Core, including triaging requests for data analysis and overall project management
  • Recruiting, onboarding, assigning projects, offboarding a team of data analysts.
  • Advertise and promote the Core to the faculty and trainees, and provide consultation for new data analytic requests
  • Work collaboratively across the Department and the School of Medicine to bring together a data analytic network
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Operations and the CFO to ensure projects are being charged out appropriately and that there is a financial sustainability plan.
