About The Position

Canon Medical Research USA, Inc. (CMRU) is proud to announce the launch of our 2026 ADVANCE internship program. Students will contribute at the forefront of innovation in medical imaging working alongside leading scientists and engineers as we develop and deliver the latest technology to our parent company Canon Medical Systems Corporation. The ADVANCE Program is a structured program with goals and expectations designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain hands-on work experience by participating in significant work projects. Students will take on assignments throughout the term related to CMRU project needs depending on their skills and interests. The goal of these activities is to make important contributions to CMRU programs while at the same time significantly advancing the student’s professional and personal development. The program runs 12 weeks during the summer term. This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week, paid internship. SUMMARY OF POSITION CMRU is looking for a qualified intern to join our Collaborative Innovation Center (CIC) team and work alongside our scientists, engineers, and collaborators in the development and testing of new liquid biopsy methods and research prototypes. Students will be mentored to gain hands-on experience to develop prototypes and contribute to the next generation of clinical applications. This position offers a great opportunity to see how your contributions can improve patient care.

Requirements

  • The ideal candidate is a full-time graduate student at an accredited college or university working towards an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field in STEM.
  • Students must be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Experience in optical experiments including alignment, electrical wiring, assembly of equipment and implementing device control software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bioimaging, optics, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.
  • Proficient in MATLAB, Python, and/or C/C++.
  • Experience in using mechanical CAD and 3D printing for simple fixturing.
  • Ability to identify problems and find solutions quickly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to take directions and manage multi-tasking.
  • Organized and detail-oriented.
  • Self-motivated to learn new things.
  • Driven and hard-working.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble an automation imaging system for new liquid biopsy research prototypes.
  • Create or update test procedures and test the prototypes.
  • Design and create simple fixtures for the test as necessary.
  • Work on multi-disciplinary teams to evaluate performance.
  • Summarize work in the form of reports and presentations.
