About The Position

Leidos is seeking a part-time Biomedical Engineer II to support intramural human use research in biomedical engineering and cognitive neuroscience at the Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton, OH. The successful candidate will support research studies and analyses to understand the human cognitive and physiological factors associated with military operations in the aviation, space, and related environments especially as they relate to motion sickness (e.g., sea-sickness, air-sickness, simulator-sickness and space-sickness), aeromedical standards, altitude effects, fatigue assessment, aviation safety, acceleration effects, neurocognitive/neurophysiological effects, and related areas. Research activities will involve human use research both in the laboratory and in the field.

Requirements

  • BA/BS or MA/MS plus 0-6 years of relevant experience in biomedical engineering, biomechanics, computational science, and neural networks.
  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance
  • US Citizen
  • Experience in design, development, testing, and evaluation of biomedical technologies and devices
  • Experience in human subject research
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to analyze physiological performance and survey data.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow all safety requirements and regulations is essential.

  • Experience in a military or medical research environment is highly desired
  • Familiarity with physiology and engineering

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, development, and testing of biomedical technologies and devices to support research at NAMRU-D.
  • Execute research protocols in support of aeromedical research objectives, including physiological monitoring and administering psychophysical tasks.
  • Collect and analyze data, perform statistical analysis and incorporate these analyses into technical reports, posters, presentations, laboratory notebooks and documentation binders.
  • Coordinate research data and perform statistical analyses. Including independent preparation of data and qualitative and quantitative data analyses, such as univariate and multivariate analyses of variance, regression analysis, and descriptive summaries.; Design and develop data management procedures.
  • Schedule and assist with subject screening and data collection.
  • Develop IRB protocols and SOPs for approval and ensure compliance with rules and regulations (subject to final Government review and approval).
  • Work in collaboration with military and civilian researchers to design, conduct and implement research studies in the areas of warfighter health and performance. Including coordination of regulatory requirements, maintenance of files/study records and all activities associated with internal and external audits in coordination with the PI.
  • Plan and modify research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments.
  • Recommend research design and development of a study budget.
  • Interact with outside customers and researchers; brief technically detailed project results to sponsors. (Subject to Government initiation and final approval).
  • Test, evaluate, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and calibrate biomedical equipment.
  • Document all work in laboratory notebooks, technical reports, posters, and documentation binders.
  • Write technical reports, abstracts, posters, technical reports and give presentations (subject to Government initiation and final approval).
  • Perform daily routine set-up and maintenance of critical human devices to include the preparation of devices for specific research protocols, operation of devices during testing and data collection, routine preventive maintenance of devices, and data collection and recording from research conducted on the devices. Devices include aircraft motion and orientation simulators, and various physiological and medical monitoring types of equipment.
