About The Position

The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for maintaining and managing medical equipment, ensuring it meets regulatory standards, and supporting healthcare operations. This role involves overseeing a hospital biomedical equipment program, leading a team, and acting as a subject matter expert in the field of biomedical engineering. The Biomedical Engineer will provide technical expertise on medical equipment, from initial concept to effective implementation, while ensuring safety and compliance with healthcare standards and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Certification as a Clinical Engineer (CCE).
  • Minimum of 3 years of hospital or healthcare experience maintaining medical equipment.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience managing a biomedical equipment program in a hospital.
  • Strong knowledge of computer-based medical systems, networking protocols, and information security as applied to medical technology within the VHA.
  • Competency in medical equipment management, including compliance with healthcare standards, safety, and recall programs.
  • Ability to manage the entire life-cycle of medical technology, from initial concept to implementation, while advising on viability, safety, and long-term suitability.
  • Strong project management skills related to medical equipment and health information technologies.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards, including those set by the International Standard Organization.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with technical and professional staff.
  • Must provide documentation of eligibility to legally work in the United States.
  • Must be able to pass client background screening for security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a hospital biomedical equipment program, ensuring compliance with healthcare standards and regulatory agencies (e.g., VHA, TJC, SMDA).
  • Oversee the medical equipment management program, including conducting hazard investigations and managing recalls and safety alerts.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in biomedical engineering, supporting specialized clinical technology, including system administration, training, quality assurance, and life-cycle management.
  • Advise clinical and administrative staff on medical technology, including emerging technologies, ensuring long-term viability, compatibility, and safety.
  • Apply project management principles to the deployment of medical equipment and health information technologies.
  • Conduct capital asset and infrastructure planning for medical equipment, including the installation and implementation of complex medical devices.
  • Develop and manage a continuing education program addressing the safe and effective use of medical technology.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders at various levels of the organization to ensure effective communication and teamwork.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements from agencies such as the International Standard Organization and healthcare industry regulatory bodies.
