About The Position

The Department of Biology at the University of Tampa invites applications for a full-time 12-month instructional staff position beginning July 6, 2026. This instructional staff member would assist in the (1) management, preparation, and maintenance of Genetics laboratory courses, (2) hiring, supervision and training of undergraduate, peer mentors for Genetics laboratories, (3) and ordering supplies for Genetics and select upper-division molecular biology laboratory courses. This coordinator would also instruct Genetics laboratories and/or General Biology (majors and non-majors) courses in the department (15 contact hours per year).

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field is required.
  • Must know basic chemical & biological hygiene and safety requirements.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to work smoothly with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Must be proficient in handling laboratory equipment and chemicals.
  • A personal commitment to quality undergraduate teaching and service to the Department and University is essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching, clerical, and laboratory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with ordering, acquiring, tracking, and distributing instructional supplies needed for Genetics and select upper-level molecular biology labs (solutions, organisms, supplies, etc.)
  • Maintaining, inventorying, and preparing supplies for these selected courses
  • Assisting with the coordination of hiring, training, and supervision of undergraduate student laboratory mentors for Genetics laboratories
  • Collecting data on at least an annual basis regarding laboratory classroom needs, for items like fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, broken glass disposal containers, etc., and working with the University Safety Officer to coordinate the disposal of hazardous wastes in departmental laboratories
  • Working with departmental instructional staff and providers to maintain several key common pieces of molecular equipment, such as PCR machines, imagers, hoods, autoclaves, nanodrops, spectrophotometers, microscopes, pipettes, freezers, etc. Includes overseeing care of instrumentation and monitoring service contracts for assigned laboratory equipment and arranging and/or performing maintenance as needed.
  • Instructing laboratory sections of Genetics and General Biology (majors and non-majors) courses as needed by the department (15 contact hours over the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters with teaching responsibilities to begin in August 2026)
