About The Position

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia, College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences seeks applicants for a Finance Generalist to join the department's fiscal team. The successful candidate will be expected to perform various duties related to budget and accounting, grant management, payroll accounting, and financial record maintenance. This position is primarily sedentary, involving extensive use of desktop computers, with occasional requirements to transport items for events and travel to attend meetings and programs.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: At least two years of experience, or equivalent experience (4-6 years) accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Licensure: None Required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Student Information Systems (SIS or Stellic) or SAFM, Workday, and Qlick/UBI.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments, meet critical deadlines, and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement accurate, timely, and complete budget and accounting documents, spreadsheets, and templates.
  • Develop and provide financial forecasts.
  • Complete all related University requirements and submittals, adhering to department and institutional standards and timelines.
  • Post-award grant management including processing NCE, MTA agreements, annual sponsor reporting, subaward set-ups, and account closings.
  • Monitor grant account balances and spending.
  • Act as Effort Reporting Coordinator for the department.
  • Process payroll accounting adjustments and journal entries.
  • Oversee the preparation of purchase orders and supplier invoices.
  • Ensure that bills are paid promptly to comply with the University's requirements.
  • Resolve discrepancies with vendors as needed.
  • Track fund accounts, special projects, or tasks to ensure appropriate entries are made and monitor account balances.
  • Audit Biology expenses.
  • Manage graduate student program finances in SAFM and Workday Financial System.
  • Oversee/utilize department T&E cards and serve as the department resource for questions about T&E cards and expense reports.
  • Maintain financial records for department funds, following University and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate faculty summer wages/salaries and financial transactions for special projects and conferences.
  • Supervise Fiscal Technician(s).
  • Serve as representative for the organization in wider institutional finance initiatives.
  • Participate in training sessions to keep apprised of changes in policy and procedures.

Benefits

  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $59,695 - $70,000 annually commensurate with education and experience.
  • This is an EXEMPT level, benefited position.
