Axle is seeking a Part-Time Biologist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute on Aging (NIA) located in Baltimore, MD.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline
  • Field of Study: Biology
  • MS office suite
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Aging.
  • Cultivate, maintain, expand, and freeze ES and iPS cell lines from mouse and human.
  • Prepare ES and iPS cells for N-linked glycoprotein labeling and analysis and for flow analyses.
  • Characterize new iPS cell lines.
  • Investigate state of pluripotency of ES and new iPS cell lines.
  • Characterize nuclear proteins and cell surface proteins by western blot, immunoprecipitation, immunochemistry, and PCR.
  • Identify/recommend resolution of discrepancies.
  • Recommend/determine the appropriate data to use, record or report.
  • Create/maintain an accurate research tracking system and database for all research activities.
  • Keep accurate records of daily experiments and results.
  • Prepare reports, spreadsheets and slides for presentation and/ or publication.
  • Write and edit scientific papers.
  • Present ongoing findings at various meetings.
  • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure supplies are properly stocked.
  • Obtain quotes and prepare purchase requests.
  • Clean Equipment.
  • Inspect Equipment.
  • Meet with lab members to present updates.
  • Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data.
  • Interpret research or operational data.
  • Record research or operational data.
  • Collect and analyze biological data about relationships among and between organisms and their environment.
  • Monitor and observe experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation by research personnel.
  • Provide technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life.
  • Study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function.
  • Identify, classify, and study structure, behavior, ecology, physiology, nutrition, culture, and distribution of plant and animal species.
  • Assist with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedure.
  • Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings.
  • Prepare ES and iPS cells for N-linked glycoprotein labeling and analysis by Mass Spectrometry.
  • Prepare ES and iPS cells for flow analyses, including the labeling of the cells with appropriate antibodies.
  • Generate primary cultures of cells for the generation of new iPS cell lines.
  • Characterize new iPS cell lines using appropriate techniques (morphology, staining, growth traits).
  • Prepare primary cell cultures suitable for iPS cell formation using standard nucleofection based technique.
  • Perform primary cell cultures of mitotically inactivated feeder layers.
  • Design and execute flow cytometry (FACS) preps, proliferation assay, and cell surface receptor analysis.
  • Design primers as needed for cell characterization.
  • Apply a wide range of conventional, established approaches, methods, techniques and solutions to new situations.
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain an accurate research tracking system and database for research activities.
  • Keep accurate records of daily experiments and results including research documentation.
  • Prepare data, results, reports as well as Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint slides, for oral presentation and/or publication in journals.
  • Attend monthly laboratory meetings.
  • Participate in lab/unit/section meetings by presenting ongoing research and findings.
  • Present paper/abstract/poster at scientific meeting(s)/conference(s).
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure scientific supplies are kept stocked.
  • Obtain quotes and prepare purchase requests for supplies, instruments and equipment, and submit to primary investigator and/or lab manager for approval.
  • Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures.
