About The Position

Stantec is seeking a full-time, mid-level Biologist/Wetland Scientist to join our Environmental Services Practice working within Northern California, to provide biological support over multiple projects and programs. Join a collaborative team focused on ecology and wetland sciences. Work includes wetland delineation, ecological assessments, and regulatory compliance for diverse projects (renewable energy, transmission, transportation, private development). This position may also include collecting biological data, surveys, habitat assessments and environmental compliance. The position is to be based out of our Sacramento offices. Stantec offers flexible work hours and a robust compensation and benefits package. The ideal candidate must have experience and proven success in wetland delineations in the West region and familiarity with Federal and State wetland and stream regulations.

Requirements

  • Army Corps of Engineers Basic Delineation Training, or approved equivalent.
  • Ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, management, and vendors to successfully meet shifting needs.
  • Ability to manage risks and safety appropriately, manage information, and provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and to prioritize and balance sometimes heavy workloads to achieve goals while keeping up with a highly mobile and changing environment.
  • Work well with others and keep other team members aware of project and client needs.
  • Able and willing to travel regionally with overnight stays as needed
  • Knowledge of California ecosystems and endangered or protected species
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Should be familiar with review and analysis of scientific data, maps, and drawings.
  • Provide support in delivering high quality work products to multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Independent work is expected, but can also include participation in team efforts.
  • Strong sense of safety and ability to participate in, uphold and enforce Stantec’s strong safety programs.
  • Good driving record and a valid drives license is required.
  • Minimum of a BA/BS degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or a related field, with 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with plant, soil, and wetland identification and characterization in the region.
  • Experience in leading wetland delineations according to US Army Corps of Engineers Manual and the corresponding Regional Supplements.
  • Willingness to travel (up to 75%) and the ability to work in the field for long hours in adverse weather conditions.
  • Mapping and data collection applications (Field Maps and Survey123).
  • Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
  • Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • The ideal candidate will be a team player and have exceptional oral and written communication skills; and organizational and note-taking skills.

  • Preferred qualifications for this position include Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification, or a state-specific certification or licensure related to wetland science.

Responsibilities

  • Wetland and water resource delineation and characterization.
  • Botanical surveys, habitat mapping, and endangered species assessments.
  • Prepare wetland delineation and technical reports for clients/regulators.
  • Support environmental permitting and compliance for federal/state requirements.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary environmental assessments.
  • Data management and analysis.
  • Attend client/regulatory meetings and provide input.
  • Possible wildlife surveys and ecological restoration tasks.
  • Communicating with your team, team leads, project manager and potentially construction crews, clients, or other stakeholders.
  • Preparing daily monitoring and/or field reports.
  • Identification and support on environmental permitting
  • Conducting desktop reviews for project impacts or environmental permitting on various projects located throughout California.
  • Assist in field work tasks, such as nesting bird surveys, vegetation community assessments, wetland delineations, special-status plant and wildlife surveys, restoration monitoring and construction biological monitoring.
