The Biological Scientist II position involves assisting faculty in training and supervising a breeding and research team, managing plant breeding and evaluation activities, and conducting experiments related to plant breeding and research. The role requires a strong commitment to compliance with policies and effective management of research activities, including pest management and equipment calibration.

  • Assist faculty in training and supervising the breeding and research team.
  • Supervise, lead, and manage plant breeding, evaluation, and research activities.
  • Manage timesheet approvals for the team.
  • Conduct experiments and analyses for plant breeding, evaluation, selection, and research.
  • Develop breeding populations and propagate and grow plants.
  • Evaluate plants and manage field plots, including photographing and describing new cultivars botanically.
  • Record plants, observations, and measurements; compile and interpret results; prepare and present reports; prepare plant patent applications.
  • Scout plants to detect and identify pathogens, insects, and weeds; develop pest management plans; select pesticides; and make pesticide application requests.
  • Set up, maintain, calibrate, operate, and test equipment for various parameters related to plant health.
  • Prepare, review, and update protocols for the plant breeding and research program.
  • Order and inventory materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Implement and update chemical hygiene plans and biosafety documents.
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.
  • At least two years' working experience with blackberries and/or ornamentals.
  • Ability to write and communicate well with diverse groups of people and growers.
  • Strong project and people management skills.
  • Certified for pesticide application, or able to obtain the certification within the first 3 months of employment.
  • Bachelor's degree in plant breeding, plant science, horticulture, agronomy, or a closely related field and three years of plant breeding and/or evaluation experience; or a Master's degree in plant breeding, plant science, horticulture, agronomy, or a closely related field and one year of plant breeding and/or evaluation experience; or a Doctoral degree in horticulture or a closely related field.
  • Ability to work in the field and greenhouses in summer and winter.
  • Self-starting, independent, and capable of effective work in groups and individually.
  • Skills to develop breeding populations, grow horticultural crops under subtropical climatic conditions, evaluate yield and berry quality, and control diseases and weeds.
