About the position

The Biological Science Technician (Wildlife and Fisheries) position is a temporary role within the Department of the Interior's Pacific West Region, specifically for the Redwood National and State Parks. This position involves conducting wildlife and fisheries surveys, collecting data, and assisting in various fieldwork activities. The role is seasonal, typically from April to October, and requires physical exertion in diverse outdoor environments. The technician will work under the guidance of biologists and may provide training to lower-graded technicians and volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct fish and/or wildlife censuses and surveys.
  • Assemble basic information on fish and/or wildlife populations.
  • Use standard statistical methods for routine testing of field data.
  • Perform fieldwork requiring the ability to accurately distinguish wildlife by sight and sound.
  • Assist staff biologists in capturing wildlife and applying visual and radio tags.
  • Gather physiological and spatial data.
  • Enter and retrieve data from Geographic Information System (GIS) and other information management systems.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines.
  • Recommend modifications to field activity procedures.
  • Provide advice and training to lower-graded technicians and volunteers.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with specific educational qualifications.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as walking, hiking, and lifting heavy items (up to 50 pounds).
  • Experience in conducting wildlife field surveys and biological aquatic surveys.
  • Knowledge of using GPS for mapping wildlife locations.
  • Ability to compile, store, analyze, and report on wildlife data using various computer programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with aquatic ecosystems management.
  • Familiarity with wildlife biology and ecology.
