Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Current open water and scientific diving certification from a recognized organization.
  • Minimum of 100 cold water, open ocean kelp forest dives.
  • At least one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service, or a bachelor's degree in a related field, or a combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with database management systems related to marine biology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with team members and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the abundance, distribution, and size of marine invertebrates, algae, and fish using underwater sampling techniques on SCUBA.
  • Act as a lead diver, providing leadership and direction to other divers in adverse environmental conditions.
  • Provide logistical support for non-field aspects of a subtidal marine monitoring program, including data entry and quality assurance.
  • Assist in preparing trip and annual reports related to the kelp forest monitoring program.
  • Document field observations appropriately and maintain equipment used for monitoring.
  • Identify the need for repairs and replacements of equipment and maintain accurate logs of maintenance.
  • Prepare menus, dive plans, manifests, and data sheets for multiday monitoring cruises.
  • Provide information on resource management issues through oral presentations.
