About The Position

The Biological Science Technician (Fish) position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is a temporary, seasonal role focused on fisheries-related studies in Alaska. Technicians will engage in fieldwork that includes monitoring salmon runs, conducting fish abundance estimates, and documenting fish movement. The role requires working in remote areas under challenging conditions, providing a unique opportunity to study native fish species in pristine wilderness.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service, or equivalent non-Federal experience.
• Experience in collecting biological information for fish studies and leading field investigations.
• Valid State driver's license required.
• Ability to carry a firearm in the performance of duties.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with GIS and automated databases.
• Knowledge of fish and wildlife species specific to the designated survey areas.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups.

Responsibilities

• Assist the study or project leader in planning the course of the project by contributing ideas and establishing practical procedures.
• Participate in fieldwork, including independent data gathering and documentation.
• Train and oversee lower graded technicians in field data collection.
• Organize and perform preliminary analysis of field data using automated databases and GIS.
• Make on-site decisions regarding project adjustments and equipment setup.
