About The Position

The Biological Science Assistant (Steelhead Spawning Ground Surveyor) position at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife involves conducting spawning surveys to monitor steelhead populations in various stream reaches. Requirements

• Experience identifying adult salmonids.
• Experience operating drift boats and kayaks in rivers and streams.
• Experience conducting salmon and steelhead stream surveys in remote areas.
• Experience conducting adult salmonid monitoring.
• Ability to communicate effectively with members of the public.
• Ability to keep neat and precise field data.
• Possession or pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working in adverse weather conditions.
• Familiarity with Oregon's fish and wildlife regulations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct spawning surveys by locating, driving to, and walking/kayaking selected stream reaches to count spawning steelhead and mark redds.
• Conduct snorkel counts of steelhead resting pools.
• Contact private landowners to gain access to survey streams.
• Conduct surveys every 7 to 10 days.
• Identify live fish species and record data collected on handheld computer or appropriate data forms.
• Operate a four-wheel drive vehicle to reach survey locations.
• Assist with angler creel surveys and winter steelhead broodstock collection.
• Support local fish hatcheries and help with the ODFW STEP program.
