About The Position

Biological inventory management for the IRF-Frederick (IRF) is needed to provide oversight, auditing, and planning of the biological samples stored at, received by, and sent from the IRF. The inventory is inclusive of biological select agents and toxins (BSAT) as defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Inventory management includes routinely assessing the inventory on-site, within the biosafety level (BSL)-2 labs and BSL-4 high containment labs and checking them against the official inventory accounting system, planning and executing training of personnel who obtain and maintain samples, auditing, drafting process documents, and writing reports of audit and other findings. The Biological Inventory Manager is a subject matter expert on regulatory requirements for BSAT inventory and management requirements and routinely handles BSAT materials in BSL-4 and Animal-BSL-4 settings. The role of the Biological Inventory Manager is to advise the IRF Director on overall inventory management and provide specific feedback to NIH Division of Safety about findings, process changes, and other emergent issues. To support such efforts to benefit the IRF, the following tasks and services are requested: Responsible for oversight of electronic and physical inventories of long-term select agent samples and short-term experimental samples, to include inventories maintained in BSL-4 and inclusive of BSAT. Conduct periodic unannounced audits of laboratory and refrigerator/freezer spaces to monitor for compliance with relevant SOPs/policies and compare electronic inventory to actual on-hand physical inventory. Draft reports of findings; propose remediation and process changes if/as needed. Responsible for developing and conducting Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) trainings and proficiency evaluations based on government requirements and as approved by the government, to include periodic refresher trainings and assessments, as needed for LIMS account user maintenance. Provide support and back-up to the Virology Repository Manager Additional duties include supporting mission priorities in laboratory setting to complete research studies.

Requirements

  • Minimum education required: Bachelor's degree that includes specialized training and research in virology, molecular biology, serology, and/or immunology
  • 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Previous recent BSL-4 experience required

  • Previous experience with IRF inventory management system preferred.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
