About The Position

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking a Lab Specialist to join the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko. This position is integral to a team focused on plant functional genomics and synthetic biology. The ideal candidate will be self-directed, capable of working independently, and possess demonstrated skills in basic molecular biology and cell culture techniques. Key responsibilities include gene cloning, gene transformation, and gene expression analysis using techniques such as qTR-PCR, western blot analysis, and RNA sequencing. Additionally, the candidate should be proficient in basic biochemistry tasks, including buffer and media preparation, and have the ability to perform basic bioinformatic analysis and computational tasks. While prior experience with plant growth and cell culture is advantageous, it is not a strict requirement. The successful applicant will also be expected to engage with undergraduate and graduate students and assist in various research support roles with visiting scientists and scholars. The Lab Specialist will have several responsibilities, including ordering laboratory reagents and maintaining laboratory stocks, scheduling and maintaining records of equipment and facilities maintenance, assisting in the development of research project plans, discussing the interpretation of results, providing written reports, keeping data records, and assisting in the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication as necessary. Furthermore, the specialist will assist greenhouse staff with the maintenance of plant materials as needed. This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline, preferably in biology, biochemistry, or plant science, and a minimum of six years of experience in a lab technician role, with a Master's degree potentially substituting for required experience. The role is strictly in-person, with no remote work options available.
