About The Position

Zymo Research is seeking a highly motivated Research Intern to join our dynamic MiDOG team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in exploring cutting-edge technologies and applications in the fields of microbiome Next Generation Sequencing and research. As a Bioinformatics Intern, you will be mentored by industry veterans from our Microbiomics R D group. The qualified individual will be responsible for initiating and completing assigned tasks throughout the duration of the internship. In this role, you will work collaboratively with other team members to design and execute infrastructures for a developing bioinformatics product focused on veterinary medicine. The ideal candidate should be flexible, an effective team player, and possess a strong interest in learning about bioinformatic applications for microbiomics and next generation sequencing. The successful candidate should also have some experience in microbiology and fundamental molecular biology laboratory processes. This position is a full-time Internship and is based in Irvine, CA.

Requirements

  • Working towards, or having completed, a BS or MS in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related field with an interest in Bioinformatics
  • Preferably junior or senior standing at an accredited university, with some bioinformatics application experience
  • Basic understanding of microbiome research processes and the application of Next Generation Sequencing fundamentals
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Python and/or R, with experience in bioinformatics pipeline
  • Familiarity with Docker and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Experience with 16S and metagenomics analysis (e.g., QIIME, DADA2, Mothur)
  • Understanding of relational and non-relational databases for data integration
  • Exposure to microbiome research or large-scale data analysis
  • Comfortable working in Linux/Unix environments with command line and Git
  • Knowledge of diverse microbiomics data types (e.g., 16S and shotgun)

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the curation of a personalized microbiome profile for veterinary diagnostics that showcases changes to the microbiome over time
  • Work collaboratively in a team-based environment to provide feedback and recommendations for project advancement
  • Assist with creating visual representations and user stories for platform features
  • Review, summarize, and apply relevant literature to project goals as needed
  • Aid in the writing and summarization process of project goals to outside parties
