By joining Bio-Techne, you'll join a company with a powerful and positive purpose of enabling cutting-edge research in Life Sciences and Clinical Diagnostics. Bio-Techne, and all of its brands, provides tools for researchers to further treat and prevent disease worldwide. All internship positions are designed to give college students an opportunity to apply techniques learned in an academic setting while obtaining new skills. This is a paid internship offering full-time hours during the summer months. All interns are required to conclude the program by giving a formal presentation on their work. Please note that no relocation assistance or sponsorship is provided for the internship program at this time. We are seeking a motivated graduate or undergraduate intern with prior experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, or software development to contribute to the creation of a web-based portal for high-throughput sequencing data generated from exosomes. This role will involve hands-on experience with data extraction, transformation, integration, and visualization, making transcriptomics data easily accessible through search functions and customizable queries. While the primary focus will be on transcriptomics data derived from next-generation sequencing (NGS), additional omics modalities may also be incorporated into the platform. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience at the intersection of genomics, data science, software engineering, and web development within a cutting-edge research environment. The ideal candidate will have a blend of technical skills and biological understanding, along with a keen interest in developing tools to facilitate scientific research.

  • Catalog, organize, and store transcriptomics data from various experiments in a structured and accessible format.
  • Develop or enhance an existing web-based data portal to host and present transcriptomics data.
  • Implement and optimize search functionalities and custom query tools for user-driven data exploration.
  • Integrate external public data sources (e.g., GTEx, TCGA, ENCODE) to enrich internal datasets and provide contextual insights.
  • Design and generate interactive visualizations to enhance data interpretation and accessibility, such as visualizing differential gene expression between conditions.
  • Work closely with bioinformatics and software engineering teams to improve existing data processing pipelines and ensure seamless integration with the web portal.
  • Document workflows, provide user documentation, and present progress updates to stakeholders.
  • Must be a currently enrolled student pursuing a graduate-level degree in a field relevant to the internship.
  • Must be able to work full-time during the duration of the internship program.
  • Proficiency in Python with prior experience in web application development (e.g., Flask, Django, FastAPI, or similar frameworks).
  • Hands-on experience with NGS-based transcriptomics data analysis and processing.
  • Strong command-line skills and experience with Linux/Unix environments.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Experience with multi-omics data integration, including proteomics, metabolomics, or epigenomics.
  • Deep understanding of genomics and bioinformatics principles.
  • Prior knowledge and utilization of public sources such as GTEx, TCGA etc.
  • Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) or NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB) for storing and retrieving biological datasets.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of front-end development technologies (JavaScript, React, D3.js) for interactive visualization.
  • Exposure to containerization tools (Docker, Singularity) and workflow management systems (Nextflow, Snakemake).
  • Competitive insurance benefits starting on day one: medical, dental, vision, life, short-term disability, long-term disability, pet, and legal and ID shield.
  • 401k plans, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), Health Saving Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Account (FSA), and Dependent Care FSA.
  • Mentorship, promotional opportunities, training and development, tuition reimbursement, internship programs, and more.
  • Employee resource groups, volunteer paid time off, employee events, and charity drives.
  • Accrued leave policy with paid holidays, paid time off, and paid parental leave.
  • Culture of empowerment and innovation, where employees feel valued and encouraged to bring their new ideas to the table.
