About The Position

Goldbelt Professional Services, LLC is seeking a responsible and professional Bioinformatician to contribute to the improvement of public health through bioinformatics, leveraging advanced genomics tools and methodologies to address critical environmental health challenges. The Bioinformatician will support public health efforts by providing expertise in whole genome sequencing, metagenomics, and genome-based typing systems to improve the detection and understanding of waterborne and environmentally acquired diseases. This role involves developing tools and reference databases, implementing bioinformatics workflows, and managing high-throughput sequencing data for analysis. The Bioinformatician will collaborate with internal and external partners on project planning and outbreak responses, leveraging next-generation sequencing (NGS) and high-performance computing tools.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated independent bioinformatics work, either through graduate work or experience after degree (via publications, code repository, or other).
  • Experience in analyzing whole genome sequence data and/or amplicon sequences.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Python, Bash, or other scripting languages.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data, leading to action-oriented recommendations.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, and interact collaboratively across teams, programs, branches, divisions, the center, and with outside partners.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in bioinformatics and bioinformatics tools (e.g., Bowtie2, Velvet, Spades), genome assembly, functional annotation, metagenomics, transcriptomics, pathogen surveillance, and high-throughput sequencing data analysis, especially within a public health setting.
  • Experience in mathematical modeling, machine learning (e.g., Bayesian network inference, Markov models, biomarker detection), and custom data-driven tool development for epidemiological and pathogen applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in developing simulated NGS datasets is preferred.
  • Experience with Nextflow for bioinformatics pipeline development is preferred.
  • Experience with version control systems (GitHub).
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Microbiology, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience as a Principal Investigator (PI) or lead in CDC or similar public health laboratory programs.
  • Experience developing and implementing bioinformatics resources for government or academic institutions, including public health informatics platforms.
  • Recognized contributions to the field through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at key conferences.
  • Previous experience with federal government agencies; preferably with CDC.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and implements bioinformatics analysis pipelines and tools.
  • Collaborates with scientists and program consultants in various aspects of the study design process, and other study support duties including analyzing and reporting of data and data dissemination to audiences.
  • Compare and validate the performance of open source bioinformatic tools and workflows to process mock and real wastewater NGS datasets.
  • Plans, prioritizes, designs, coordinates, and leads basic and applied studies to support development of wastewater sequence surveillance methods.
  • Develops strategies to meet immediate and long-term programmatic needs assuring that strategies reflect most promising directions in disease surveillance.
  • Participates in the development of program documents, including standard operating procedures, web content, and training materials.
  • Prepares findings for reports and presentations to internal partners, Agency leadership, and at scientific meetings.
