The Bioinformatician in the PennCHOP Microbiome Program (PCMP) will develop and apply bioinformatic methods for analysis of large sequence-based microbiome data sets. This role involves collaboration with principal investigators and laboratory directors to select appropriate analytical methods, troubleshoot challenges, and prepare reports for publication and grant submission. The position is available at two levels: Bioinformatician B, focusing on method development and data analysis, and Bioinformatician C, which includes independent work and supervision of other programmers.

  • Develop and apply bioinformatic methods for analysis of large sequence-based microbiome data sets.
  • Interact with PIs and laboratory directors to select appropriate analytical methods for studies.
  • Troubleshoot problems during data analysis and keep collaborators informed of project progress.
  • Design, implement, and validate new bioinformatics approaches and participate in statistical methods development.
  • Prepare figures and written reports for publication and grant submission.
  • Present results at internal meetings and symposia.
  • Master's Degree and 3-4 years of experience in a scientific or engineering discipline for Bioinformatician B; Ph.D. preferred.
  • Master's degree and 5-6 years of experience for Bioinformatician C; Ph.D. and 2 years of experience preferred.
  • Completed coursework in bioinformatics, biology, computer science, and statistics.
  • Expertise in coding and biology/bioinformatics required.
  • Experience in statistical analysis, programming in R, parallel/distributed computing, and database management is helpful.
