About The Position

Spear Bio, founded in 2021, is a well-funded and rapidly growing biotech start-up headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts. Our proprietary technology, Successive Proximity Extension Amplification Reaction (SPEAR), is a novel wash-free immunoassay platform, offering unprecedented sensitivity. We are dedicated to revolutionizing early disease diagnosis and monitoring by providing scalable, ultrasensitive solutions that deliver unparalleled accuracy in measuring low-abundant biomarkers, enabling clinicians and researchers to improve patient outcomes and advance global health. We are seeking a motivated BioEngineering Associate to join our Automation and Systems Engineering team. In this role, you will support the testing and validation of our Immunoassay Systems by executing systematic test strategies across assay workflows and integrated engineering systems. Your work will directly contribute to ensuring our platforms deliver reliable, reproducible, and high-quality results. The ideal candidate is passionate about working at the intersection of biology and engineering. You will play a key role in validating performance across assay workflows and hardware/software interfaces, helping the team identify root causes of failures and ensuring Spear Bio's platforms consistently deliver high-quality results. This role is based on-site in our lab in Woburn, MA 5 days/week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 0–3 years of experience in bioengineering testing or validation of immunoassays or nucleic acid assays.
  • Hands-on experience with immunoassays and/or qPCR systems.
  • Experience with liquid handling automation, mechatronic instruments, or integrated life science systems.
  • Basic programming or scripting skills (Python, C#, or similar) for test automation or data analysis.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and data visualization for assay or system performance.
  • Analytical mindset with a systematic approach to problem-solving
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • Comfortable collaborating across teams in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Run and document tests on automated assay workflows and engineering subsystems.
  • Evaluate reproducibility, robustness, and sensitivity of proteomic and molecular biology assays.
  • Support system-level testing of fully automated workflows combining assay and instrumentation.
  • Help identify whether performance issues stem from assay chemistry, workflow automation, or hardware subsystems.
  • Assist in root cause analysis to resolve failures and improve system reliability.
  • Analyze and organize test data using Excel or similar tools.
  • Help generate reports and dashboards tracking assay performance and validation results.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams across biology and engineering.
  • Participate in design discussions to ensure systems are built with testability in mind.
