About The Position

The individual in this role performs all the activities necessary to implement safe and effective technical operations in all assigned units. The Bio Medical Technician understands and operates all of the equipment necessary to perform his/her duties including but not limited to water treatment, hemodialysis machine maintenance, and ancillary medical equipment maintenance. This individual ensures proper documentation and participation in quality control activities as required elements of this position. This individual is responsible for inventory management of all supplies and equipment and performs all work safely, effectively, and in a manner that is consistent with State and Federal regulations and Company policies and procedures. This individual provides safe, effective, and compassionate care that is consistent with State and Federal regulations and Company policies, procedures, and guidelines and within his/her scope of practice.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in a health care related field preferred.
  • A.S. degree in electronics or related curriculum preferred.
  • Candidates must obtain required manufacturers certifications.
  • Minimum 1-3 years mechanical repair and/or maintenance experience required, dialysis or medical equipment a plus.
  • Familiarity and use of hand and power tools. This includes prior use of Digital Volt Meters, amp meters, conductivity meters, pH, water hardness, chlorine and other chemical measuring and test devices.
  • Prior experience or demonstrated knowledge of all hazardous aspects of universal blood and body fluid precautions, material safety data sheets, safety equipment use, emergency contacts, and action plans.
  • Working knowledge of the technical aspects of hemodialysis
  • Prior experience with physical plant layout and location of related equipment -- including circuit breakers, water mains, HVAC controls, and fire equipment/ systems.
  • Must have demonstrated record of and commitment to safety, and dedication to excellence.
  • Must possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate professionally and effectively with other staff members, patients, and physicians.
  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and monitor all technical activities in accordance with Company administrative, financial, and quality policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance with all local, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for day-to-day operation and maintenance of all medical equipment, including water treatment plant, solutions delivery systems, hemodialysis machines, and other ancillary equipment required for delivery of safe, patient care.
  • Perform all preventative maintenance inspections in accordance with Company policies and procedures, and any state regulations.
  • Maintain adequate “par” levels to meet monthly needs and keep supply inventory area(s) in a neat, organized manner.
  • Maintain inventory of repair and maintenance parts
  • Demonstrate effective communication with clinical staff, patients, vendors, and home office.
  • Responsible for the Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) program and compliance with state, and federal requirements of same.
  • Perform all equipment calibrations and repairs in a timely manner and verify proper device function after calibrations and repairs.
  • Complete and maintain all required documentation.
  • Oversee and/or verify completion of required daily water system performance checks and tests and document results.
  • Routinely inspect water system components, bicarbonate/acid system components for proper operation, settings, and conditions.
  • Perform RO and distribution system sanitizations per manufacturer’s recommendations, or more often, as indicated by microbiological test results.
  • Collect, prepare, and submit water and dialysate samples for chemical and microbiological testing per Company policy.
  • Train and provide in-service educational sessions for staff on various important biomedical shared duties
  • Review, record and/or maintain documentation of all water test results.
  • Participate in clinic Quality meetings
  • Serve as the Center Safety Officer by educating patients and staff on proper safety methods.
  • Train and provide in-service educational sessions for staff on various important biomedical shared duties
  • Oversee and/or verify completion of all Bicarbonate / Acidified Concentrate Solution preparation and testing documentation. Verify performance of Bicarbonate Concentrate System sanitization.
  • Prepare and submit orders for all center supplies based on monthly usage and/or center needs.
  • Receive and/or maintain documentation of supply order deliveries, including timely delivery of packing lists and invoices to the accounting department for posting and payment.
  • Perform and submit bi-monthly and/or monthly supply counts.
  • Work with staff to ensure accurate preparation of supply reports associated to proper fiscal management.
  • Perform minor repairs such as replacing ceiling tiles, light bulbs and, with approval, arrange external building trades repair service.
  • Perform monthly inspection and documentation to include physical plant and grounds, test of center safety devices such fire extinguishers, HVAC, fire and security systems, emergency, exit and external lights, and, if applicable, emergency power generator.
  • Monitor housekeeping services to ensure a safe, sanitary environment.
  • Maintain HMIS required documentation including Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • Perform, record, and/or document results of required environmental testing.
  • Maintain all regulated medical waste manifests and logs.
  • Maintain proper storage of hazardous materials.
  • Immediately report any unsafe condition(s) found to Regional Technical Manager and Clinical Coordinator.
  • Perform all duties in a courteous and professional manner and comply with all Company established policies and procedures.
  • Facility maintenance and repair when required.
  • Participate in staff, technical, educational, and quality improvement meetings.
  • Attend and / or participate in all designated training sessions.
  • Request assistance or advice from supervisor as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance and coverage to other Company facilities as needed.
  • Enforce and adhere to all HIPAA compliance policies.
  • Demonstrate the Physicians Dialysis Difference program and culture.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
