About The Position

As a Billing Specialist, you will be responsible for the full revenue cycle management process for mental health and substance abuse billing services. This role ensures accurate coding, timely claim submission, proactive denial management, and accurate payment posting, ensuring that providers are correctly reimbursed while complying with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 regulations. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, Accounting, or Business preferred.
  • 2 -3 years minimum of medical billing experience, with a focus on behavioral health, mental health, or substance abuse treatment preferred.
  • Deep understanding of Medicaid, Managed Care Organizations (MCOs), and commercial insurance, particularly in the local state in which SAFY does business.
  • Strong experience with EHR/Practice Management software and billing clearinghouses.
  • Must be able to effectively operate in a dynamic environment with monthly deadlines and annual performance goals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, for data analysis and reporting.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills with the ability to challenge assumptions and propose solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborative team player capable of building strong working relationships.
  • Proven track record of improving processes or contributing to operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and submit electronic (EDI) and paper claims to commercial payers and Medicaid.
  • Investigate, appeal, and resolve denied or underpaid claims, maintaining a low denial rate.
  • Verify patient insurance benefits and obtain pre-authorizations for services.
  • Post payments and reconcile Electronic Remittance Advices (ERAs) and Explanation of Benefits (EOBs).
  • Apply correct CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM (F-codes) specific to behavioral health services.
  • Prepare and send patient statements, manage patient collections, and handle billing inquiries.
  • Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and state-specific Medicaid billing requirements.
  • Ensure patient demographic and insurance information is accurate in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with all levels of SAFY staff by participating in joint meetings, and problem identification and resolution.
  • Other duties as assigned.
