About the position

The Billing Clerk at Starting Point Behavioral Healthcare is responsible for ensuring accurate billing and timely submission of claims to various insurance payers, including Medicare and Medicaid. This role involves monitoring claim statuses, researching rejections and denials, and documenting account activities. The Billing Clerk must possess critical thinking skills and a solid understanding of insurance eligibility requirements to effectively manage billing processes and ensure efficient claim processing.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accurate billing and timely submission of electronic and/or paper claims.
  • Monitor claim status and research rejections and denials.
  • Document related account activities and post adjustments and collections.
  • Coordinate with providers to clarify incomplete information for proper account adjudication.
  • Correct, complete, and process claims for all payer codes.
  • Analyze and interpret claims to ensure accurate submission to insurance companies.
  • Follow up with insurance companies on unpaid accounts identified through aging reports.
  • Process claim appeals online or via paper submission.
  • Assist in reconciling deposits and patient collections.
  • Process refund requests and communicate with the credentialing coordinator on claim review issues.
  • Respond to billing inquiries from patients and third-party carriers.
  • Identify trends and issues related to billing and reimbursements and report findings to the Team Lead or Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 2 years of medical office experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and billing processes.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to problem solve independently and in a team environment.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with billing systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Medicare and Medicaid eligibility requirements.
  • Familiarity with commercial insurance payer payment methods.
