About The Position

The Benefits Specialist position is located in Tallahassee within the Division of Retirement at the Florida Department of Management Services. This role involves calculating costs for various retirement-related scenarios, processing violations and estimates, providing customer service, auditing member accounts, and preparing retirement benefit estimates. The specialist will also serve on committees to improve the administration of the retirement system and perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Two years of professional experience in insurance, retirement, social security, administration, call center, customer service, fiscal work, statistics, personnel, or a related field.
  • Postsecondary education may be used as an alternative for years of experience on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Calculates the cost for forensic upgrades and military leaves of absence.
  • Calculates the cost to buy back into the pension plan from the investment plan.
  • Processes termination and reemployment violations, divorce estimates, and benefit recalculations.
  • Provides customer service through counseling and personal interviews with members.
  • Consults and provides technical assistance to employment agencies.
  • Investigates discrepancies for Third Party Administration and audit staff.
  • Audits and balances individual member accounts.
  • Approves the eligibility of a member to claim retirement credit for military service and other types of service.
  • Gathers and analyzes member information for verification of service credit and eligibility.
  • Adjusts contributions, salary, and service credit in retirement accounts.
  • Prepares estimates of retirement benefits for members contemplating retirement or entering DROP.
  • Prepares statements of accounts to reflect contributions required to balance retirement accounts.
  • Determines eligibility for service retirement and participation in DROP.
  • Approves retirement applications for DROP members and calculates retirement benefits.
  • Serves on committees and in workgroups to improve retirement system administration.
  • Performs other duties as required.
