About The Position

Conducts comprehensive behavioral & mental health (BMH) assessments as well as suicide assessments for patients who present to the Emergency Department. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, leaders, patients and families to develop safe disposition planning. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in postgraduate clinical or social work setting
  • Supervised clinical hours served in order to be licensed
  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling from an accredited graduate school
  • Completion of Marcus Crisis Prevention Program as a user within 90 days of hire
  • Georgia Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Georgia Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks
  • Skills in coordination, delegation and team collaboration
  • Demonstrated knowledge of age-appropriate assessment, treatment and practice
  • Ability to show accountability for actions in an autonomous role
  • Ability to establish rapport and use therapeutic communication with others
  • Ability to remain calm and manage verbal/physical responses in stressful situations
  • Knowledge of BMH facilities, 1013 placement process, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care in comprehensive BMH assessments and discharge planning for patients presenting in a behavioral and mental health crisis in the emergency department or other practice settings.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary staff & providers (i.e. emergency department, consult psychiatry, case management, nursing, etc.) to provide support for determination of appropriate discharge disposition.
  • During BMH assessments, complete 1013’s to authorize transportation to an inpatient acute psychiatric facility for patients requiring involuntary treatment.
  • Provide ongoing support and daily reassessments throughout patient’s stay.
  • Provide support to BMH Case Management team throughout discharge/placement process.
  • Share information and collaborate with Behavioral and Mental Health team members to ensure quality care coordination.
  • Connect patients and families to outpatient behavioral and mental health resources as appropriate.
  • Assist families in accessing resources to achieve and/or maintain stabilization and self-sufficiency.
  • Assess patients and families for safety, abuse, and neglect concerns.
  • Serve as a mandated reporter for Child Protective Service and Adult Protective Service concerns.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new hires.
  • Participate in mandatory team huddles and team meetings, including shift sign out, rounds, clinical huddles, and staff meetings.
  • Complete follow-up phone calls to families & third-party organizations following patient discharge
  • Deliver evidence-based interventions as clinically appropriate, including family-based crisis intervention, lethal means counseling, etc.
  • Complete clinical and administrative documentation by end of shift.
  • Respond to Code BERTs as able in the emergency department.
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational and departmental training requirements.
  • Provide patient and family education as indicated.
