About The Position

Under supervision of the Coordinator of Paraprofessional Services, provides leadership to the Behavioral Intervention Specialists (BISs) working on the Crisis Stabilization Unit and Temporary Observation Unit. BISs provides a broad range of social services to clients and their families. As the lead BIS, part of the role is as a direct service staff person, providing these social services. The services include, but are not limited to: client intakes, treatment team planning, monitoring clients and responding to their needs, assisting in dealing with personal and social problems, deescalating clients, and performing crisis intervention. May provide support to clients and families and/or serve as a liaison for social services. May perform case management duties. Additionally, the Lead BIS oversees the provision of these services by other BISs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a social service-related field from an accredited college or university AND one year of experience in a social service-related field OR High School diploma or GED AND three years of experience in a social service-related position OR one year of experience at the lower-level Social Services Tech 2 (SST011) or position equivalent.

  • A bachelor’s degree in social services or related field plus Two years related work experience AND Experience working with individuals with a Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) and/or Substance Abuse Diagnosis

Responsibilities

  • Provides support to BISs and plans work of assigned staff.
  • Onboarding-Provides on-the-job training to new hires and/or arranges work-related training opportunities.
  • Provides real time coaching/mentoring/training/correction and positive supervision to staff on an ongoing basis.
  • Anticipates problems and responds proactively; troubleshoot concerns and is solution focused.
  • Monitors staff performance
  • Provides feedback and information regarding job performance of BIS staff to the Coordinator of Paraprofessional Services to be used in professional development and, when necessary, with disciplinary measures
  • Educates staff on Time and Attendance Policy and how to request leave appropriately.
  • Ensures adequate staff coverage for each shift.
  • Monitors leave, attendance, tardiness, and other job expectations of staff, and works with Coordinator of Paraprofessional Services to address issues timely and according to Advantage and BHCC policies and procedures.
  • Creates and maintains a high-performance environment characterized by positive leadership and a strong team orientation.

  • Motivates, coaches, trains, and supports staff to improve quantity and quality of work performed.
  • Serves as staff role-model by adhering to agency rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Recruitment-Assists in recruiting, interviewing, initial orientation, and training of BISs in accordance with established laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Prioritizes recruitment, review of resumes, and interviewing so that vacancies are filled quickly.
  • Assigns work to employees based on workloads, staff abilities, or other relevant factors.
  • Collaborates with the Coordinator of Paraprofessional Services regarding staff strengths to assist with shift assignments.
  • Structures job duties of BISs to meet organizational goals with available resources.
  • Maintains information one may need to assist staff, such as Worker’s Compensation steps, Critical Incident reporting steps, emergency numbers, etc.
  • Alerts other leadership about occurrences.
  • Attends leadership meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Provides appropriate information and/or input in meetings pertaining to paraprofessional staff duties and collaboration within the team.
  • Communicates any information that could potentially impact the safety, coverage, operations, morale or other functioning of the unit to leadership and other staff who need to know to be able to perform their duties.
  • Responds to leadership calls, texts, emails timely.
  • Attends internal and external educational programs and training as required or as available for continuing professional education.
  • Completes all mandatory training timely.
  • Ensures services occur as scheduled.
  • Participates on BHCC leadership Team to: follow up on actions plans with programs and designated staff to ensure follow-up and timelines are established and met to provide services deliverables. make services recommendations and action plans to streamline services.
  • Incorporates knowledge of pertinent new trends and developments into services.
  • Makes recommendations for any related organizational changes.
  • Acts as client advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve crisis.
  • Identifies environmental impediments to client of patient progress.
  • Represents the agency and program in an informed and courteous manner with all clients, family, internal and external contacts, and community linkages.
  • Maintains professional behavior when completing tasks and interacting with others as a team member.
  • Communicates effectively and collaboratively with others to obtain information; ensures response within designated timeframe.
  • Promotes customer satisfaction and assists with resolving grievances, complaints, and inquiries.
  • Works with BHCC staff in a team approach
  • Participates in safety drills as scheduled.
  • Notifies Coordinator of Paraprofessional Services and facilities manager of any building and furnishings are not operational, up to code, or according to guidelines and requirements.
  • Collaborates with Coordinator of Paraprofessional Services to identify training needs for staff regarding safety and risk management.
  • 50% of scheduled time is in direct service to clients, performing tasks BIS’s.
  • Provides back up and/or fills in to provide direct services in the absence of an BIS (BIS responsibilities)
  • Documents all interventions/services/interactions in client's chart according to agency standards and time frames.
  • Complies with regulations on confidentiality of client information as specified by established policy.
  • Monitors clients’ behaviors, symptoms, treatment response, and overall health
  • Ensures 15-minute room checks are occurring and documented appropriately.
  • Takes vitals, per agency guidelines and prescriber orders.
  • Ensures equipment is calibrated according to agency-defined schedule and documents.
  • Promptly notifies appropriate professional of any unusual patient/client/consumer incident/situation.
  • Recognizes the need for client crisis intervention and reacts appropriately to routine situations and/or promptly notifies person on call or immediate supervisor.
  • Attends and provides appropriate input in scheduled treatment team meetings.
  • Shares information obtained from client/family/other providers and participates in developing and reviewing appropriate treatment plans.
  • Provides appropriate information regarding psychological stresses and the level of global functioning observed and reported, so the treatment team can provide appropriate, best-practice services.
  • Engages with clients individually to provide appropriate guidance and direction pertaining to personal and social development within established guidelines.
  • Transports, or decides for transportation of, clients to outside/off-unit appointments in a timely manner.
  • Provides social and psychological support to clients and their families through listening and discussing problems and progress as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
