Behavioral Health Technician II Position Summary Delivers direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse to individuals with psychiatric or substance use disorders, supports the therapeutic milieu, contributes to treatment planning, and serves as a role model and mentor for other staff.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of one year of experience in a psychiatric health‑care facility working with chemical dependency, dual diagnosis, psychiatric, or geriatric patients preferred.
  • Certifications: CPR and de‑escalation certification required within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care tasks delegated by the RN, including taking vital signs, collecting specimens, documenting care, facilitating group education, and monitoring patients.
  • Demonstrate effective milieu management and accompany patients to meals, breaks, off‑unit visits, and appointments.
  • Report medical or psychiatric changes to the RN and assist with admissions, including belongings inventory, visitation, and vital signs.
  • Document property at admission and discharge, conduct safety checks, and promote a clean, therapeutic environment.
  • Encourage patients with activities of daily living and facilitate or co‑facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic groups.
  • Apply crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques and maintain knowledge of program policies and procedures.
  • Provide orientation and mentorship to new staff members, serve as a preceptor, and train colleagues on group facilitation and maintaining a therapeutic milieu.
  • Employ therapeutic communication, assess patient needs related to chemical dependency, and document plans of care from admission through discharge.
  • Participate in treatment planning as part of the interdisciplinary team and perform other duties as assigned.
