About The Position

The Behavioral Health Technician I provides direct, supportive, and compassionate care to clients across a variety of settings. This role contributes to daily client supervision, crisis intervention, health monitoring, and the facilitation of structured therapeutic or educational activities. Behavioral Health Technicians ensure a safe, trauma-informed, and therapeutic environment while implementing client treatment plans and documenting observations essential to client progress. The ideal candidate is dependable, empathetic, and committed to supporting individuals as they work toward recovery, stability, and improved quality of life.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of responsible employment required; Experience in human services preferred.
  • Successful completion of background check including criminal, driving, abuse/neglect, and fingerprint clearances.
  • Completion of New Hire Orientation and all required annual trainings (including Relias).
  • Current driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and active auto insurance.
  • First Aid certification within 3 months of hire.
  • CPR certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Medication Administration training per program standards.
  • Behavioral Management training within required timeframes: CPI for Residential programs Crisis Management via Relias for Outpatient programs
  • Completion of required 36 hours of training within two years and 40 hours annually ongoing.
  • Knowledge of program-specific policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
  • Age requirements for operating company vehicles: 21+ for standard vehicles 23+ for 15-passenger vans
  • Adolescent program: Must complete specialized youth-behavior training within 6 months (communication, trauma, abuse, peer pressure, etc.).
  • Understanding of confidentiality requirements for behavioral health and substance use treatment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including clear and concise documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to write routine reports and professional correspondence.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage with clients, families, and community partners.
  • Ability to follow instructions delivered verbally, in writing, or diagram form.
  • Basic keyboarding skills and proficiency navigating electronic medical records.
  • Ability to solve problems with multiple variables in structured situations.
  • Ability to build rapport while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

Responsibilities

  • Admit, monitor, supervise, transfer, and discharge clients/patients.
  • Monitor vital signs and withdrawal symptoms; escalate to medical staff when critical symptoms present.
  • Obtain and document vital signs and medical symptoms per policy or provider instruction.
  • Oversee medication administration following program policies and within permitted training/scope.
  • Maintain accurate medication records including self-administration or staff administration.
  • Monitor, document, and inventory over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
  • Document blood glucose levels when applicable and maintain agency-approved equipment.
  • Report medication errors or discrepancies per agency policy.
  • Follow Medication Storage & Destruction procedures.
  • Conduct safety and supervision checks as required.
  • Illinois only: Participate in on-call rotation for shift coverage.
  • Assist clients with personal care needs (bathing, grooming, dressing, etc.).
  • Perform all duties listed under Residential Facility responsibilities.
  • Ensure medication practices follow training and physician orders.
  • Monitor and document vital signs and critical health symptoms.
  • Promote adherence to program expectations using trauma-informed approaches; promptly communicate concerns to the treatment team.
  • Actively participate in treatment planning by identifying client strengths, needs, and preferences.
  • Document exceptional behaviors, safety concerns, and shift change information accurately.
  • Assist with client orientation including rights review, vital signs, safety searches, and specimen collection.
  • Facilitate urine collection, testing, lab-send-offs, and documentation.
  • Answer phones, take messages, and respond to crisis calls professionally.
  • Assist, educate, and redirect clients regarding daily living activities.
  • Monitor and document client activity including bed checks during overnight shifts.
  • Ensure client attendance and participation in scheduled activities.
  • Model positive behavior and solution-focused problem-solving.
  • Ensure compliance with precaution protocols and related documentation.
  • Observe and communicate health concerns promptly to supervisors or treatment teams.
  • Prepare for and facilitate group sessions (rehabilitative support, education, recovery skills, recreation).
  • Provide transportation to appointments as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment through consistent housekeeping practices.
  • Report maintenance and safety hazards promptly.
  • Follow all program policies, procedures, and organizational code of conduct.
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Demonstrate commitment to organizational goals and mission.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership.
