Our 11th Floor at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is a newly created 12-bed Pediatric Medical/Psychiatric Unit designed to provide services to patients needing medical and psychiatric care. This unit offers care with an interdisciplinary team including psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, social work, chaplains, behavioral health nurses, and behavioral health technicians. The unit focuses on providing programming, activities, and education to strengthen patients’ mental and behavioral health. Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is dedicated to fighting for every child, with over 350 pediatric specialists and subspecialists, national rankings, and innovations. It includes inpatient and ambulatory spaces, as well as a Level 1 trauma Emergency Department designated for children. The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients requiring direct observation. Working under the delegation of the Bedside RN, the BHT collaborates with the Nurse, Behavioral Health team, MSW, and Medical Team to implement the established behavioral plan for the patient. BHTs are trained in verbal de-escalation and situational awareness and receive education on various patient populations. They are also cross-trained to a limited scope of the Nursing Technician role to learn daily patient care and ADL skills. Employees in this role appreciate the opportunity to positively impact a child’s life during difficult times, enjoying providing care, offering a supportive environment, and partnering with various disciplines.
