About The Position

Behavioral Health Security Officer Provides security services to the Carilion Clinic Health System, its hospitals, Inpatient Psychiatry units, Emergency Medical and Psychiatric Services, ambulatory/outpatient clinics and other designated areas in which visitors and/or patients may be collocated. The Behavioral Health Security Specialist (BHSS) provides proactive violence prevention and training toward fulfilling the basic mission of safe, effective, high quality care amidst emotionally charged situations in which behavioral escalations may occur. Individuals serving in this capacity are non-sworn security personnel with additional training in de-escalation tactics and problem solving. The BHSS is trained to engage escalating patients and/or visitors in verbal and non-verbal communications aimed toward mitigating risks of harm or injury, enhancing safety of patients and staff, and improving customer service. Responsible for assisting clinical staff at designated locations under the Carilion Clinic Police and Security Department, which includes Adult and Pediatric Emergency departments, inpatient and ambulatory units and other designated areas. Monitors the safety and security of individuals within the assigned unit or area of supervision. Interacts with individuals in designated areas of supervision with the goal of establishing trust, integrating in the milieu as a member of the healthcare team, providing a calm, non-aggressive presence. Responds to emergency or crisis situations and: may intervene in escalating verbal exchanges provide physical intervention as needed and appropriate demonstrates sound judgment maintains composure when dealing with physically or verbally abusive patients or visitors works assertively to mitigate risks of assault or harm to patients, visitors and staff. Maintains a high degree of visibility in the assigned areas. Embodies and demonstrates appropriate techniques as learned in de-escalation training. Effectively de-escalates patients, visitors or other individuals as a member of the care team. Prevents potentially violent situations. May assist members of the care team in delivering effective bedside care using appropriate techniques. Consistently deliver the best in customer service and patient care. As a team member, demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors, and other employees. Reporting directly to the Chief of Police and Security, the Behavioral Health Security Specialist will maintain and foster productive and effective relationships with clinical care teams in the areas served. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable and culturally sensitive care to patients of all ages served in the assigned units. Ensures responsible and visible commitment of diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy, programs, and initiatives through collaboration and implementation of initiatives across the system. Proactively recognizes bias and develops/executes strategies to mitigate such.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent Degree in criminal justice or related field training preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years experience in the area of security or behavioral health.
  • Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Achieves or presents certification in system required de-escalation tactics prior to completion of orientation.
  • Life Support: BLS required
  • Other Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrates capability for problem solving decision making, sound judgment, appropriate assertiveness.
  • Adaptable, open to change and able to work effective in ambiguous situations.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with ease and composure essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) years of security, public safety or law enforcement preferred.
