About The Position

Behavioral Health/Psych RN's work with individuals and families who have psychiatric problems and disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychosis, dementia and more. According to the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, psych nurses are experts in crisis intervention, mental health, medications and therapies to assist patients in mastering mental illnesses. Tasks include assessing mental health needs, developing nursing care plans, managing a therapeutic environment, assisting with self-care activities, crisis intervention and counseling. Psych RN's usually work in patient facilities, health departments, mental health agencies, long term centers and correction facilities. Usually work directly with a person who has anxiety disorders, mood disorders, substance abuse, Alzheimer's disease.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN): 4-Year Education
  • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN): 2-Year Education
  • Must earn an ADN or BSN degree and pass the NCLEX to apply for a license as a RN
  • RN‘s can only work with an active state license
  • CPI is often required
