The Behavioral Health Nursing Team Lead provides clinical oversight and day-to-day leadership of nursing services within a Behavioral Health program or site. This role is responsible for coordinating nursing operations, ensuring safe and effective medication management practices, supporting regulatory compliance, and delivering high-quality behavioral health care services. The Nursing Team Lead functions as the clinical lead nurse at an assigned location and serves as a liaison between frontline nursing staff and Behavioral Health leadership. This position relies on professional judgment, clinical expertise, and leadership skills to support program operations with limited direction. The Behavioral Health Nursing Team Lead promotes person-centered, recovery-oriented care and supports interdisciplinary collaboration across behavioral health services.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum Associate Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum one year of nursing experience required.
  • Experience in Behavioral Health settings (mental health, substance use treatment, crisis services, inpatient or community-based psychiatric care) strongly preferred.
  • Prior charge nurse or leadership experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric medications and common behavioral health diagnoses.
  • Understanding of crisis intervention principles and trauma-informed care.
  • Familiarity with behavioral health documentation standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with multidisciplinary teams, individuals served, families, and regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain accurate clinical records.
  • Ability to assess clinical situations, identify problems, and implement appropriate interventions.
  • Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor nursing staff.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Experience in Behavioral Health settings (mental health, substance use treatment, crisis services, inpatient or community-based psychiatric care) strongly preferred.
  • Prior charge nurse or leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of nursing services at an assigned Behavioral Health location or program.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards, behavioral health best practices, and organizational policy.
  • Monitor and support safe medication administration practices, including documentation accuracy and medication error reporting.
  • Assess and monitor the physical and psychiatric health status of individuals served.
  • Obtain and document vital signs and clinical observations to identify changes in condition.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, medical providers, therapists, and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care.
  • Support crisis stabilization efforts and respond appropriately to behavioral health emergencies.
  • Educate individuals served regarding medications, side effects, and general health management.
  • Communicate with families, guardians (when applicable), and care partners regarding health status and treatment updates consistent with privacy regulations.
  • Conduct health-related quality assurance reviews and infection control monitoring as applicable.
  • Ensure nursing documentation meets clinical, regulatory, and payer standards.
  • Support implementation of evidence-based behavioral health nursing practices.
  • Assist with onboarding, mentoring, and skill development of nursing staff.
  • Participate in audits, licensing reviews, and accreditation activities.
  • Promote a safe, therapeutic, and recovery-focused treatment environment.
  • Monitor staffing coverage and communicate needs to Behavioral Health leadership.
  • Support performance management, coaching, and corrective action as needed.
  • Model professional nursing practice and uphold organizational standards.
  • Serve as clinical resource for behavioral health nursing questions and escalation concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned.
