About The Position

Clinical Chaplains serve as an integral part of interdisciplinary team serving patients and families cared for within UI Health Care. They advocate for and with patients and families and staff according to values consistent with patients' belief systems.

Requirements

Master’s degree and Board-Certified Chaplains or eligible for board certification. Board certification is required within two years of hire through NACC, BCCI, SCA, or another recognized certifying body.
Excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation. Demonstrates high attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR).
Experience in fast-paced, high-volume work environment.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

Previous chaplaincy experience in an academic medical center setting desired.
Previous experience with Epic electronic medical record desired.

Responsibilities

Responds to all inpatient and outpatient consultations and screening requests.
Responds to all inpatient and outpatient consultations and screening requests.
Responds to the concurrent spiritual needs of patients’ families.
Conducts spiritual assessments of patients and families.
Develops spiritual care plans specific to the patient’s individual beliefs. Creates and adjusts spiritual care plans specific to age- and diagnosis-related considerations.
Provides or arranges spiritual care for patients/families.
Demonstrates knowledge of the impact a diagnosis may have on spiritual issues.
Helps patient and/or family identify their personal and spiritual beliefs and resources.
Participates in departmental 24 hour on-call coverage.
Advocates for the spiritual care of patient and/or family, and staff.
Advocates for dignity, well-being, and quality of life as priorities in care and treatment of patients.
Provides follow-up & support as requested by families.
Assists family in the grieving process and provides resources.
Administers sacraments and rites as appropriate.
May provide follow-up contact of patients in the outpatient clinic for continuity of care.
Provides a listening and supportive presence.
Provides sacred and religious materials when requested.
Assists with end-of-life healthcare planning such as Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Living Wills.
Coordinates hospital and community resources in assessment and service to patients.
Consults with community Clergy or spiritual leaders as desired by the patient and family.
Provides information on spiritual care, and the spiritual issues of illness, end of life, and grief to patients, families, and the public.
Serves as a resource on the acquisition and development of educational material on spirituality and health care.
Participates in outreach activities, provides educational programs to other professions and external agencies.
Makes referrals to credentialed counseling professionals when indicated.
Demonstrates respect for all members of the University community while performing duties and in response to administrators, supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
Participates in Daily rounds, team conferences, & family meetings as possible and upon request.
Provides information to team members regarding spiritual considerations.
Informs and educates team members about chaplaincy services and patient status and collaborates with team regarding service provision.
Acts as a spiritual care resource for care teams.
Assists team members including clinical and non-clinical staff in dealing with patient care and work-related spiritual challenges.
Maintains a current working knowledge of ethical principles and processes.
Assists in the processing of ethical issues with patients, families, and medical/nursing staff.
Promotes a welcoming and respectful workplace environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated, and where every individual is empowered to make a positive impact.
Makes timely and concise clinical entries into patients' medical records covering the spiritual assessment and delivery of the spiritual care plan and visits with patients and families.
Completes Departmental statistical reports.

Participates in local, regional, state, or national chaplaincy and health care-related groups.
Participates in the Department of Spiritual Services.
Participates in instruction of CPE and other professional training programs.
Supervises assigned learners, such as CPE students, and prepares for mentorship sessions.
Incorporates feedback and evaluation into performance.
Reviews documentation/notes and provides constructive feedback to learners. As appropriate completes required sign-off on notes for learners/mentees assigned.
Identifies problems/opportunities and assists in setting goals for service development.
Involves other disciplines and implements plans.
Evaluates outcome of service development.
Participates in/facilitates activities pertaining to research on spirituality of illness and end of life care.
Reviews quality management patient data related to patient outcomes to guide the development and improvement of spiritual care.
Represents the interests of the University and of Spiritual Services in the use of resources to meet service and productivity demands, division goals, and budgets; strives to promote continual process and quality improvement.
Completes other projects or tasks within agreed-upon times.
Devotes at least 75% to direct service (patient-related) activities. (This might be more like 70% because of the many hats we wear at MCD)
