About The Position

The SPARC Behavioral Health Clinical Nurse – SPARC (BHN) participates as an integral member of the subspecialty SPARC clinic. The SPARC BHN performs clinical, administrative and technical tasks which contribute to the smooth workflow and high-quality patient care experience primarily within the SPARC subspecialty clinic with some additional responsibilities to the outpatient psychiatric providers and BHN team. The primary function of the SPARC BHN will be to administer and record results of the DIVA-5 or other semi-structured interview and screening tools and to communicate those results via EMR and discussion to the SPARC team or referring outpatient psychiatric provider. The SPARC BHN will also provide overall support to the SPARC team to ensure coordination, delivery, and communication of care provided within the clinic to referring providers. Responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to: supporting Epic in-basket workflow by reviewing team/provider in-baskets and MyChart messages; coordinating the review and follow-up of phone requests for medical advice and prescription refills within SPARC; completing and documenting reviews of controlled substance prescriptions within the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program; returning phone calls, completion pre-visit preparation; monitoring patient flow; assisting with triage and patient scheduling; and coordinating with other departments, services and programs relevant to the SPARC workflow and those referred for DIVA 5 by outpatient psychiatry team. Psychiatric providers and the Behavioral Health Nurse Manager may delegate assignments to the SPARC BHN. Requirements

  • Current licensure as a registered nurse (RN) is required. Must be licensed in the State of Wisconsin OR hold a multistate license in a state in the licensure compact (eNLC).
  • Current licensure as a practical nurse (LPN) in the State of Wisconsin or must obtain licensure as a practical nurse in the State of Wisconsin within six (6) months of employment.
  • Successful completion an LPN training program from an accredited educational program.
  • Possession of or eligibility for a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate is required. Employee must obtain certification within four (4) months of employment.
  • A strong interest in working with people with behavioral health concerns and mental illness is required.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn how to effectively use diagnostic interviewing skills used during assessment and strong motivational interviewing skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, basic psychiatric terminology and ADHD specific medical terminology and knowledge of basic pharmacology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including superior skills in telephone communication.
  • Ability to recognize, identify and report problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Knowledge of medical records and appropriate documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to be culturally sensitive and to work with a diverse patient population.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with patients and staff and to function effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality is required. Knowledge of or ability to learn HIPAA requirements.
  • Ability to travel to various work sites. Employee is expected to provide personal transportation. Possession of a valid, Wisconsin driver license if the employee is operating a motor vehicle.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform or learn standard clinical procedures according to established protocols and policies.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn and use computer based applications such as MS Office, electronic medical record systems and scheduling applications.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn outpatient clinical administrative procedures.
  • Basic understanding or ability to learn about reimbursement/insurance practices for medical care.
  • Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the basic nature of disease and the basic nature of behavioral health and to provide instruction on proper care, treatments and follow-up as directed.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • Ability to bend, reach, lift, pull, push and/or carry up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to be a team player in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to interact with staff at all levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university is preferred but not required.
  • One (1) year of relevant experience working in a clinic or outpatient setting is desirable.
  • While experience in a behavioral health setting is desirable, no psychiatric experience required.
  • Experience with EPIC is desirable.
