About The Position

The Behavioral Health Medical Assistant plays a critical role in the Behavioral Health Department by conducting mental health intakes, measuring vital signs, and documenting medical histories. This position is responsible for preparing and administering prescribed injectable psychotropic medications under the direction of a mental health nurse practitioner and ensuring clients are ready for therapy sessions and psychiatric evaluations. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the BHMA performs essential front desk duties, including patient scheduling, follow-up calls, and medical record management. They collaborate closely with care team members to develop individualized patient care plans, identify and address gaps in care, and ensure continuity of treatment through interdisciplinary teamwork.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of a formal Medical Assistant program or other related program.
  • CCMA, CMA, or RMA
  • 1 year of medical assistant experience in a mental health/behavioral health practice strongly desired.
  • Front desk and office administration experience highly desired.
  • AHA CPR-BLS required
  • Must be able to work independently and possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must have excellent time-management, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Knowledge of mental health terminology and medication administration.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and deal tactfully with other personnel, visitors, patients, providers, customers, and the general public.
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be flexible, have personal integrity, and function effectively as a team with other employees.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to multi-task in a busy work environment with multiple providers.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct client mental health intakes including measuring vital signs and documenting mental health histories.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed injectable psychotropic medications as ordered by the mental nurse practitioner.
  • Prepare clients for therapy sessions and psychiatric evaluations.
  • Perform front desk duties including patient scheduling, follow-up calls, medical record requests, check-in, check-out, etc.
  • Partners with care team members to develop individualized patient care plans including identifying and working to address gaps in care.
  • Keep exam rooms clean, sanitized, and well-stocked.
  • Accurate and timely documentation.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care.
  • Document clinical sessions and treatment progress in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Advocate for clients by connecting them to necessary resources and support systems.
  • Participate in case consultations, team meetings, and clinical supervision.
  • Engage in professional development to stay updated on best practices and licensing requirements.
  • Support crisis intervention and de-escalation as needed.
