The Behavior Support Assistant (BSA) supports the school and staff they are assigned to in the successful implementation of behavior modifications for students exhibiting challenging behavior. The BSA coaches' staff on the implementation of behavior supports so students are able to achieve their behavior goals. Reporting directly to the Coordinator of Behavior Interventions and Supports, the Behavior Support Assistant performs the following duties as directed by a Teacher Specialist for Behavior Interventions and Supports.

  • Identifies and models behavior modification strategies.
  • Utilize and model crisis intervention techniques for school staff.
  • Provide feedback to school-based staff on their implementation of behavioral strategies.
  • Provide crisis intervention services as needed through the use of CPI.
  • Create written and visual materials for staff and students.
  • Collect and interpret student behavior data in order to coach staff on how to make modifications to student plans.
  • Conduct behavior interventions with students.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  • Provide recommendations to school staff and central office personnel regarding supports and techniques to enhance the educational experience for students.
  • Support training initiatives targeting behavior improvements for students.
  • Participate in student concerns meetings as appropriate.
  • Ability to present information to staff individually and in groups.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Behavior Intervention and Supports.
  • Bachelor's degree, AA degree (or equivalent) combined with experience providing support to students with behavioral challenges.
  • Knowledge and use of culturally responsive practices.
  • Ability to collect, format and present data using excel or compatible software application.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Training in crisis de-escalation techniques.
  • Ability to accurately observe, record, and interpret student behaviors.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
  • Meet the qualifications of a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
  • Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs.
  • Experience working with students with significant behavior difficulties in an elementary setting.
  • Experience supporting Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
  • Experience providing training to adult learners.
  • Support Salary Scale Grade S08: $23.38 per hour; starting.
  • 10-month position (190 days / year), 7 hours per day.
