About The Position

The Special Education Behavior/Instructional Paraprofessional at McAdams Junior High School provides direct assistance to students with physical and instructional needs in both special and general education settings. The role involves implementing the CPI framework for crisis prevention, verbal de-escalation, and physical restraints. The paraprofessional will assist with classroom programs, self-help/self-care, behavior management, and instructional programs under the supervision of the director, principal, and certified teacher.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of at least 30 college hours or a formal State or local academic assessment.
  • Valid Texas educational aide certificate.
  • Current CPI training.
  • Ability to work with children who have emotional and behavioral disabilities.
  • Effective communication skills, including maintaining descriptive behavioral data.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical ability to lift/maneuver students with significantly impaired mobility.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment and MS Office and Google Drive systems.
  • Recent experience working with students with emotional and behavioral disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, or physical disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the behavior management of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining dangerous students as needed.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to develop pro-social, school-appropriate behavioral skills and conduct instructional exercises supervised by the classroom teacher.
  • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs and personal care.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, including on the bus and in other school settings.
  • Keep the teacher informed of the special needs of individual students.
  • Support and participate in extracurricular activities as needed.
  • Assist the teacher in the preparation of instructional materials and restoring the classroom setting after disruptions.
  • Maintain FERPA and HIPAA confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff development training programs and faculty meetings.
