About The Position

The job of Behavior Instructional Assistant (BIA) was established for the purpose/s of assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of students with Emotional Disturbances; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; providing information to appropriate school personnel.

Requirements

  • Applicant must be able to document two or more years of training and/or experience in the implementation of effective behavior management principles for students with emotional disturbances, including, PBIS, de-escalation strategies, and trauma informed practices, with school-age students with emotional disturbances.
  • Minimum of 2 years of college credit in education or related field
  • If the school building is classified as Title I, 48 hours of college credit or the ability to pass the Title I assessment test is required.
  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and using district approved crisis intervention techniques.
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include; instructional procedures and practices; age appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; and stages of child development/behavior; and safe handling of blood-borne pathogens and crisis de-escalation techniques.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule activities, collect data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions.

Responsibilities

  • Model effective instruction in 1:1 and in small groups settings with students with emotional disturbances
  • Carry-out intense behavioral and social programming with student
  • Assist IEP team in developing Functional Behavior Assessment and related Behavior Intervention Plan
  • Deliver consistent positive behavioral supports throughout all programming
  • Intervene with appropriate team-identified strategies when undesirable behavior occurs
  • Assist certified staff in developing individual student materials
  • Participate in team meetings as appropriate
  • Assist certified staff in the training of other staff and paraeducators
  • Assist students in generalizing skills to small groups and other instructional settings
  • Maintain student confidentiality at all times
  • Assist with ongoing data collection regarding student behavior and social skill development and generalization
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by team
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the educational team
  • Working under direct supervision using standardized practices; providing student, classroom and building information to certified/classified staff when necessary. The behavior instructional assistant is supervised by the emotional disturbance program liaison.
