About The Position

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is seeking a full-time experienced Animal Behavior professional to join our team. This position will be responsible for developing and administering animal training and behavior programs at HSTB, both Hillsborough and Pinellas campuses. Provide professional, compassionate, stellar customer service to all who visit, call, volunteer, and donate. Oversee all behavior programs, implementing changes in programs when necessary and/or creating new programs or protocols as needs arise. C ontribute to the physical and emotional health of shelter animals by applying the principles of animal behavior science in evaluating how animals interact with each other and their environment, thereby increasing adoptability through programs that keep our population happy and healthy. Make behavior-based recommendations. Identify behavior needs of the shelter animal population. This includes evaluating behavior, and creating individual behavior and enrichment plans as needed. Work closely with the medical staff to assure no underlying medical problems that are affecting the behavior of the animals. Communicate with staff regarding behavior, challenges, or issues with individual animals. Provide hands on assistance for staff or volunteers when handling of a challenging animal is needed. Must be able to make immediate decisions based upon situations presenting themselves without warning that may include life threatening situations. Drive the long-term fulfillment of HSTB’s mission with Animal Behavior programs that not only benefit the animals in our care, but also the community at large. Deliver training for employee s and volunteer s in a nimal b ody l anguage, training, h andling and safety Work with the Volunteer Manager to organize and oversee volunteers who are assisting with behavior and enrichment implementation. Receive referrals from the Foster Coordinator for assistance with animals in foster care. Develop relationships with qualified animal behavior professionals to support animals after adoption. Continue to cultivate a knowledge and understanding of animal behavior and the most humane, effective training methods in the industry.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills
  • MUST have experience as an Animal Behavior professional
  • Working one weekend day

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Behavioral Studies preferred
  • Accredited certification CPFT-KA or CAAB is a plus
