About The Position

The Before School Program Leader provides meaningful and enriching opportunities for youth in YMCA programs that are offered at local elementary and middle schools before the start of the school day. The Before School Program Leader will help students develop and strengthen academic, physical, and social skills through tutoring, mentorship, and enrichment. Before School Program Leaders will provide academic enrichment and tutoring in classroom groups of up to 20 students, as well as organize and provide outdoor recreational activities in the school yards. This position will work under the supervision of the Program Site Coordinators and Directors, and will need to be flexible, willing to take initiative, be punctual, and able to make a commitment to work throughout the entire school year.

Requirements

  • 18+ years of age for elementary school programs, 21+ years for middle school programs
  • Associate’s degree or higher, or High School diploma/equivalent, plus any of following:
  • Completed 48 college units verified by transcript
  • Passed CA Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST)
  • Passed District Instructional Aide Exam
  • Experience working with youth (elementary or middle school)
  • Highly motivated to provide quality program opportunities to youth
  • Team player
  • Knowledge or expertise in youth development
  • Comfortable leading physical activities with youth
  • Available daily Monday-Friday during morning youth program hours; shifts vary ~7:00-10:00 am
  • Willing to participate in bi-annual evaluations and supervision meetings as needed
  • Current YMCA approved CPR and First Aid certification (training available upon hire)
  • TB Test clearance
  • Fingerprint background check clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Child Development or related field
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of arts, dance, drama, or sports
  • Connections in the local community

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and participate in specialized and theme-based curriculum that meets the needs of the individual child with regards to cultural, developmental, and socioeconomic background.
  • Identify and report critical incidents and act swiftly in emergency situations as well as adequately observe participants’ activities and enforce safety regulations both virtual and in-person.
  • Ensurethe delivery method, content, and facilitation all meet child-safe protocols as outlined by YMCA of San Francisco.
  • UtilizeOut of School Time best practices to ensure consistent and safe programming
  • Seta positive example for all staff, children, and volunteers.
  • Maintain necessary administrative records for programming – sign in/sign out, log book, emergency information, and policies and procedures.
  • Respectfulcommunication with staff, participants, parents, and volunteers.
  • Planyouth program activities with parent, participant, and staff input
  • Ensure all youth programs meet safety and security requirements per YSF guidelines.
  • Knowand follow guidelines from the YMCA San Francisco Child Care Staff Manual.
  • Complete all mandatory ADP LMS safety training and Y-USA e-Learning before the first shift in the facility.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
