About The Position

The Benton County Sheriff's Office internship program aims to help students enrolled in an accredited Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice program the opportunity to gain knowledge about the Benton County Sheriff's Office and enhance their understanding of the criminal justice system. Successful Intern candidate(s) will spend time learning all aspects of law enforcement functions within the Benton County Sheriff's Office through verbal instruction, ride-a-longs, and performance of law enforcement-related activities. This is a Part-Time, paid Internship opportunity scheduled to last about 12 weeks; June 2nd - August 29th, 2025. Hours of Work typically interns work weekdays with some evenings and weekends work as needed and when available (Approximately 20 to 25 hours per week).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent GED and at least 18 years of age.
  • Current enrollment in a Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice Program (requiring an internship as a part of the college curriculum) at the post-high school level.
  • Have completed the first year of post-secondary education before the anticipated hire date of June 2nd, 2025.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
  • Must successfully complete a background check.
  • Must complete and pass a physical exam, psychological exam, physical ability testing, drug, and alcohol screening.
  • Obtain and maintain certifications and licensures.

Nice To Haves

  • Priority will be given to those applicants who were or are residents of Benton, Stearns, or Sherburne counties before embarking upon post-secondary education.
  • The Benton County Sheriff's Office is looking for applicants interested in learning about our office and the Law Enforcement profession.
  • Applicants should be mature, motivated, ambitious, flexible, punctual, hardworking, and be a self-starter.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and work with Sheriff's Office staff in all divisions/areas including Boat and Water Patrol, Civil Process/Warrants, Court Security, Detention, Emergency Communications Center, Investigations, Jail, K-9, Narcotics, Patrol, Prisoner Transport, Records, SWAT, Training, VOTF, Weapons Screening.
  • Attend required trainings as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
