About The Position

The primary purpose of this position to perform specialized law enforcement work in the investigation of criminal offenses for the department.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of modern criminal investigative practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws relative to criminal investigations.
  • Knowledge of the locations of streets, roads, highways, and the geography and socioeconomic characteristics of the County.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, techniques, and equipment associated with the Investigations Division.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency and routine situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action.
  • Ability to make observations and remember names, faces, and various details.
  • Ability to analyze facts and apply interpretation of laws to specific situations.
  • Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to use computer and relevant software.
  • Ability to present court testimony and evidence effectively.
  • Ability to manage time and be detail oriented.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignment
  • High School graduate and two (2) years of experience in uniform field services such as Patrol, Civil Process, SRO (this does not include Detention experience); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training Certified
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license

  • Investigation and Supervisory/Leadership Training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations at the scene of the crime to determine exact nature of law violations, searches for clues, and makes preliminary interrogations of suspects; gathers and labels evidence found, lifts fingerprints, and photographs pertinent evidence.
  • Interview complainants, suspects, witnesses, and other persons who may have information related to crimes or suspected criminal activity.
  • Maintain communications with informers and surveillance over known agitators and other suspected law violators.
  • Prepare detailed investigation and arrest reports; assembles and organizes statements and evidence for presentation in court; attends court and presents evidence and testimony.
  • Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations and making arrests and reviews current bulletins published by the Federal and State Bureaus of Investigation.
  • Educate members of law enforcement, related criminal justice agencies, and the public regarding operations and law violations in the County.
  • Perform undercover work, as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Maintain knowledge of the agency organizational rules, policies, procedures, services, and mission.
  • Plan, prioritize, and organize work effectively to produce quality work with measurable results and within identified deadlines; Function in highly stressful circumstances and demonstrate the ability to adapt to changing priorities, deadlines, and directions; ability to maintain calm demeanor while dealing with stressful situations and customers.
  • Demonstrate the County’s core values through performance and conduct. This expectation extends beyond the workplace and County systems to include off-site, and off-duty conduct that undermines an employee’s creditability as a representative of the County; Conduct business in an ethical manner at all times while maintaining a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Coordinate work efforts with other employees and organizations to accomplish a common task; responsible for managing matters affecting employment and completing personnel-related activities timely and according to County policy.
  • Safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with ADAAA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADAAA, FMLA and other federal state and local standards.
  • Ability to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check.
