About E+ES: Caterpillar’s Electrification + Energy Solutions (E+ES) division focuses on delivering advanced electrified power train, zero-emissions products/technologies, and the solutions and services associated with these technologies. Focus areas include batteries, fuel cells, motors, inverters, micro grid controllers, charging, energy storage systems, lifecycle solutions/services and integration of components for ePowertrain solutions across industries. Job Summary: E+ES currently has an opening for a Battery EOL Test Project Lead Engineer. This position is located in Mossville, Illinois with responsibility for the production manufacturing EOL (End of Line) test of E+ES battery module, string, rack/pack/group product lines. The incumbent will report to the E+ES Battery Manufacturing Engineering Manager, and will partner with and provide technical EOL testing guidance to global engineering and supplier partner teams. You will lead the planning and delivery of complex projects, continually learn and stay abreast of innovative technology, mentor, coach, and assign daily tasks to team members, and broaden your professional network.

Requirements

  • Degree Requirement: Bachelor’s or advanced degree from an accredited college or university in an Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related Engineering/Technology curriculum OR extensive related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Technical Excellence: Extensive background in electronics or electronic systems testing/validation of Batteries, Power Systems, Power Electronics, and/or Electric Drive / E-Powertrain products.
  • Level Extensive Experience: Experience with Cadet, Caterpillar Electronic Technician, J1939, and Vector tools (ie: CANape / CANalyzer).
  • Product Testing: Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.
  • Level Extensive Experience: Coordinates execution of test plans, including resources, strategy, schedules, processes and tools.
  • Collaborates with design team to ensure testing considerations are incorporated into system design.
  • Recommends tools and techniques for automating, simplifying and enhancing product testing.
  • Ability to safely operate testing equipment and tools as needed (after on-the-job training).
  • Capacity Planning & Management - MFG: Thorough knowledge of various electronics test equipment and manufacturers of that equipment, such as battery cyclers, sequencers, & emulators.
  • Level Working Knowledge: Experience with capital expenditures and managing capital projects (for electronic test equipment).
  • Documents major considerations of product testing volume and installs required capacity.
  • Estimates time, effort and resources required for thorough testing.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Level Extensive Knowledge: Ability to gather relevant information, compare, contrast, and quantify data, identify relationships, and predict and manage failures is critical.
  • Ensures that assumptions and received wisdom are objectively analyzed in decisions.
  • Engineering - MFG: Knowledge of processes, techniques and methods of engineering in a manufacturing environment; ability to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention.
  • Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.
  • Level Extensive Knowledge: Experience with New Product Introduction and Change Management for new technology systems and products.
  • Utilizes preferred tools, techniques and methods for estimating project cost and time.
  • Identifies risks and vulnerabilities; creates contingency plans.
  • Conducts regular and ad-hoc project reviews with project team, sponsors, and clients.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Proven experience in troubleshooting and resolving complex electrical system issues and malfunctioning components.

  • Experience in electronics product design, development, simulation and analysis preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Project leadership of E+ES product’s production EOL test processes, test plans, equipment, capacity, and utilization both currently and strategically into the future.
  • Create project plans for test activities, write work instructions to train the production workforce as necessary, outline instrumentation requirements for testing, conduct testing, analyze test results, communicate findings, and write technical summary reports.
  • Ensure test processes include full traceability of test results for warranty/claims review, and tests conducted at the supply base are fed into and stored in Caterpillar’s systems for retention and review.
  • Provide ideas for continuous improvement (CI) to the safety, quality, velocity, and cost of test operations, regularly improving testing cycle times as product confidence and testing methods matures.
  • Partner with E+ES Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, Validation Engineering, and Compliance teams to develop and implement robust PFMEAs, control plans, and production test plans.
  • Stay closely involved with Engineering-led testbed, early-learner and prototype build’s testing and validation activities, resolving NPI issues, and collaborating to ensure all best practices and lessons learned are pulled into the production EOL testing process.
  • As many products are manufactured outside of Caterpillar facilities, incumbent must work closely with supplier partners in the development and execution of complex offsite testing requirements, which ensure the most efficient and cost-effective systems are used to validate quality built products.
  • Analyze the supplier’s current or proposed testing designs and equipment to determine feasibility / acceptability.
  • Travel to suppliers, both domestically and internationally, as new testing processes and equipment are developed and put into service and as occasional urgent needs arise.
