About The Position

Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers while producing minimal noise. This internship is a part of a 10-week full-time summer internship program opportunity. This role will be based at Archer’s headquarters in San Jose, California and relocation or housing will not be provided. Archer is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to join Archer. This internship provides a hands-on opportunity to gain practical experience within the Battery Management System (BMS) team. The Battery Controls Engineer Intern will play a vital role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and optimal performance of our BMS state estimation and prediction algorithms.This role is important because the employee will contribute directly to the development of rigorous accuracy analysis and simulation frameworks crucial for validating the system against complex aerospace certification standards. The intern's work will directly support the goal of deploying a safe, high-performance electric aircraft designed to transform urban air mobility.

Requirements

  • Going into the 2nd or 3rd year in college career
  • Understanding in Li-ion battery cell behavior and battery management system architectures
  • Experience with simulation and programming tools such as Simulink and Python

Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive pipeline for battery temperature state estimation accuracy analysis, including:
  • Collaborate with test engineers to develop and execute tests to evaluate battery thermal performance and collect data for validation
  • Quantify discrepancies between online BMS estimations, high-fidelity thermal models, and experimental data
  • Identify and analyze error sources that may contribute to estimation inaccuracy
  • [Stretch goal] Architect and implement an automated simulation framework capable of handling large-scale testing and simulation needs
