About The Position

The purpose of this position is to operate all three pellet mills at maximum efficiency and maintain required temperature. The Batcher Operator is responsible for operating batching machines and pellet mills, scheduling feed production, communicating with feed dispatch to prevent feed shortages, and ensuring the highest pellet quality and maximum efficiency by making necessary adjustments. This role involves batching feed to ensure continuous supply to the pellet mills, running all pellet mills, grinding, and batching in 4000 programs, and preventing contamination. The operator must keep the ingredient chart updated, confirm continuous grinding, monitor the auto-lube system, transfer corn between silos, monitor and adjust downstream liquid applications, and rotate ingredient bins on a first-in first-out basis. Additionally, the position requires maintaining a clean control room, collaborating with other operators and loaders, completing various daily paperwork, and training new operator helpers. The Batcher Operator also participates in team development, communication, and policy implementation, coordinates work for best practices, attends team meetings, fosters cohesiveness, and identifies and resolves issues with the team leader. Familiarity with Simmons’ established operating systems (quality, security, office environment, company policies) and understanding the role's support for these systems is also required.

  • Must be able to pass a company issued forklift written and driving test if needed.
  • Must have the ability to make good decisions and communicate effectively with others and leadership team.

Responsibilities

  • Operates batching machines at the mill.
  • Operates all 3 pellet mills at maximum efficiency and maintain a minimum temperature of at least 180 degrees.
  • Schedules feed production based on what feed has been selected to be pulled and what will be pulled.
  • Communicates with feed dispatch on a regular basis to ensure there are no feed ‘outs’ (farms running out of feed for birds).
  • Checks the rolls and makes the necessary adjustments to assure the highest pellet quality possible, and maximum efficiency.
  • Batches feed for the pellet mills so that there is ample feed over each mill and no mill runs empty, except for feed changeovers.
  • Ensures all pellet mills, grinding, and batching are run in 4000 programs at all times.
  • Ensures there is no contamination due to over batching or routing errors.
  • Keeps the ingredient chart updated at all times.
  • Confirms grinding is running at all times to ensure we do not run out of ground corn.
  • Monitors the auto-lube (grease) system.
  • Transfers corn from the big silos to the small ones when needed.
  • Monitors the downstream liquid applications continually and make the necessary adjustments to ensure correct application.
  • Rotates all ingredient bins to ensure inventory is used on a first-in first-out basis.
  • Keeps the control room neat and clean at all times.
  • Works together with the operator and loader to communicate production flow of activities.
  • Completes required paperwork (pellet sheet, batching sheet, daily production sheet, track sheet, bin rotation sheet, liquid usage sheet, etc.).
  • Maintains the dry erase board in the load out office, in the breeder bay and the control room to ensure the correct feed type is labeled on the bin charts at all times.
  • Conducts the training for new operator helpers.
  • Participates in ongoing development, communication and implementation of team concepts, programs and policies.
  • Coordinates work to ensure B.E.S.T practices with all team members.
  • Attends appropriate team meetings.
  • Fosters strong cohesiveness regarding all major issues; e.g., direction, annual plan, budget, policy changes, etc.
  • Accepts responsibility to quickly identify any areas that lack cohesiveness, bringing them to the attention of the team leader and working with the team in a supportive manner to resolve issues and actively look for ways, and reinforces actions needed, to achieve synergy possible within the larger organization.
  • Maintains familiarity with Simmons’ established operating systems (e.g. quality, security, office environment, company policies); understands the responsibility to maintain familiarity with the systems and this position’s role in support of these systems - including a consideration of the impact of individual actions on the systems and the responsibility to communicate concerns and improvement ideas.
  • Performs other duties as necessary in support of business objectives.
