About The Position

The Sports Specialist at the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids is responsible for leading a variety of sports and recreational activities and games. This role involves teaching specific sports skills, monitoring programs for safety and engagement, and assisting with operational tasks such as running scoreboards and providing excellent member service. The specialist is expected to create a safe, inclusive, and fun environment for members and participants to develop skills and enjoy physical activity. Basketball skills are required, and the position requires availability on Monday mornings from 9 AM to 12 PM.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 6 months of athletic experience or participation in structured sports programming
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages and lifestyles
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within the first 60 days
  • AED-Oxygen Certification required within the first 60 days
  • First Aid Certification required within the first 60 days
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training
  • State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT)

Responsibilities

  • Teaches specific sports skills and runs classes
  • Maintains supervision of participants and members
  • Enforces YMCA safety standards
  • Follows emergency procedures as needed
  • Sets up and takes down equipment
  • Monitors the use of the facilities and program areas
  • Runs scoreboards and assists with program operations
  • Distributes participant information as needed
  • Maintains all areas in clean, presentable fashion
  • Supports the Sports Director in addressing member/parent complaints
  • Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids
